A Dave and Ed album would be good, but then after one of them, it would be like "Okay, so where;s the Van Halen reunion?"

      Oyvay, I've been drinking!

As far as forgetting the music...

I'm sure that Eddie was so fucking cranked...it probably all sounded the same to him...

and being that spED was playing in front of 20,000+ every night...

        well...Dave could've sang KumBayYa....

It was soley based on spotlight...period...
"Van Halen was one of the most hallelujah, tailgate, backyard, BBQ, arrive four hours early to the gig just for the parking lot bands. And still to this day is. It's an attitude. I think it's a spirit more than anything else is."

100 bucks says Dave did sing that at sometime during his career on stage somewhere.

But what drove Dave and the VH bros. back in 1979 isn't what drives them today.

In the studio Dave probably had lyric sheets in front of him, plus there is the thing of punching in fucked up and forgotten lines. Live though, a lot of his forgetting was staged. How many boots have you heard "I forgot the fucking WOOORRDDDS!" I'm sure there were cases where he actually forgot them, but I think a big part of it was an act.

One a similar subject, Robert Plant was notorious for mixing up his lines and forgetting lyrics. I don't think he was going to get fired for that. :D

Oh, and to answer if Dave's a rockstar or musician....he's a rockstar.

Before music sheets and studios there was Sunset Blvd. and most of the earliest work Ive found from VH, Dave was missing cues and botching lines. I think he took whatever music he was going to play/sing and gave it his own twist (albeit: fucking up) and called it his own.

Not sure what boot it was, but in the bar he insisted everyone get on the dance floor, and reiterated that they were called "Van Halen, make no mistake about that". Prolly from the Live Anthology boot...

                  RockStar all the way.

Rockstar seems to sometimes mean a hack.Like Moviestar compared to Actor.

To me Rockstar means a Musician who has achieved Iconic Status
thru his Musicianship if that is what your sayin, i'm in.

You don't reach Rockstar without being a great musician.

The whole Diva Sh!t is a Bust Like Rockstar, There is only one Diva
and she is the lead singer and greatest of the current singers
in the greatest Opera troup of the year or the times.

These hacks world over are screwing with the words of greatness
                    and skewing the meanings .

The local trashbag actresses are callled Divas.

Then those singer bitches had the Diva Tour. They don't even sing opera.

Dave is a Rockstar and there are very few in my book and i feel that
he is a Rockstar due to his ability to sing write and compose music
                    of the rock style.

On Dave's terms, he would say that he is a legend!

But yeah, he is a rockstar first and foremost. And that makes him a more interestng musician...

Have an old VHS tape around here, and on it is a Roth interview from 1984, conducted by Kathie Lee Gifford. He's talking to her about Van Halen, and he says something along the lines of "Edward is a musician. I'm a song-and-dance man. What I bring to Van Halen is something other than music...not BETTER than music, but other than."

Far as Roth failing to sing a few lyrics and verses here and there when he was live with CVH (and no doubt he did that frequently back in those days), I've got plenty of boots with howling mistakes made by both Ed and Alex during various shows in terms of missed cues and odd mistakes in rhythm parts where Ed fretted them wrong, so I doubt some missed parts by Dave were a significant contribution to the breakup.

I think Ed may have heard and bought into a belief that more than a few at the time (from critics to reviewers to even some fans of the band) expressed, which basically went along the lines of Ed was an incredible guitarist, but he was wasting his talent in a party band with a frontman who couldn't sing very well. Am not saying this is what I thought, but I heard far more than one person say this and read more than one review which implied the same. So although Dave did say he was the one who said "I quit" in 1985, and Ed admitted in more interviews than not at the time that "Roth walked...Roth bailed", it really doesn't matter, because Dave and the rest of Van Halen were fed up with each other by that point anyway.

I think of Dave as an entertainer above all else. Music is just his primary means of expressing himself. That's not a putdown, just how I feel.

Drugs and classic VH? Nooooo! Say it isn't so Ted! I don't condone the use of illegal substances, but if you were there you would have had the ride of your life.

Shit, he bought into it from the get-go. Thing is, the motherfucker that was dictating arrangements, working hand-in-hand with studio production, and doing his flat-out best to give some movement to the message (unreal guitar work) onstage didn't really have to sing that well!!

Fuck it, here we go again.

The definition of Rockstar, lots of antics were part n' parcel as he'd say to the spontanaity of the party band ceremonies.

Forgetting the words as much a prop as im gonna fuck your girlfriend, Jack or Look at all the people here tonight....

On any givin night he refers to Unchained as (Pork Pie Hat) on the setlist, intentianal play on words. Had they played perfectly they never would have been tagged the Peoples Band.
