    Sammy.

All the love songs and corny lyrics destroyed the band's image.

He also pissed off much of the hardcore original fans.

the more i think about it, the thing that damaged VH most was Me Wise Magic and Can't Get this Stuff No More. I'm not a big fan of those songs but just the two new recordings with roth put the sound and thought in everyone's head that DLR was back in, even though there was nothing official. and then when they hired cherone, it was a slap in the face since it looked like they were back with dlr for the long haul. that did more damage to them continuing as a band without DLR than any other singer could have done

I agree w/ the above w/ how Sam turned this rock band "soft." I think Ed believes he's too good a musician to play rock and tries to overuse the sustainer on all the songs (each by the way having 6 or more guitar tracks---difficult to translate in concert) The band's in no-mans-land and doesn't have a compass to direct themselves out.

            It has to be Sam.

How many Dave bashing Gary lovers do we get in the Army starting shit?

Gary was short lived, at least he had that going for him.

I agree it was Ed .
Since Dave left and it was Ed's band or corperation he's to blame.
Those other guys were hired hands (or mouths in this case ) only.
They were not a band with equal input as to what was put out.
              Ed had the final say.
              It could have been worse.
Patty Smythe ( the Scandal singer ) was his first choice.

Actually, the not-so-secret-truth is Al runs ALL the business side of things...

That's why Sam called AL and not Ed first when he wanted back in in 04...
He knew that if he got Al to say yes, it was a done deal...

Who was it going logo shopping with D-Ro before the VH4 tour last year?

                  Reverend Al...

Dave & Ed will always have a bond,
but Al seems to be the missing link in all this....

The whole biz of diddling around with Dave in 1996 for two tracks, which rasied people's expectations regarding a full-on CVH reunion complete with new material and a tour, then having all of that end up as little more than a promotional stunt for a greatest hits album...THAT was what hurt Van Halen the most.

Yes, album sales had slowly dwindled throughout the Van Hagar years, but had the band just went directly from Hagar to Cherone without the Roth interlude then perhaps Van Halen 3 wouldn't have had so much resistance built-in against it. It was the tease of reuniting the only lineup of Van Halen that ever mattered, then a lame attempt at a bait-and-switch that pissed off so many. The fact that it was Cherone is KIND OF academic in that sense (perhaps if they had went with, say, Coverdale the impact wouldn't have been quite as laughable).

At that point, the Van Halens were basically intent not only on doing exactly what they wanted, but giving the finger to what the people wanted to see. And that time around, it wasn't like it had been in 1985 when Roth bailed. In 1996, we wanted to see the band with Roth, and Roth made no secret of wanting to give the people what they wanted. The Van Halens basically said "We're doing what WE want to do, and people can either take it or leave it."

As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, the Van Halens hurt the band far worse than Hagar or Cherone did.

in 1986 I was a Van Halen's Fan, I like Van Halen cause they were different, with Sammy they could compete with Bon jovi.I love Ed but van hagar was not my band.I followed DLR and I became a huge fan of DLR and Steve Vai.
