With that said, I bet there would be different perception on the Layne issue if the band was called "Cantrell." Don't you agree? I think the fact that Ed and Al were still in VH and it was their surnames kind of made it easier for people to accept them keeping the band name.

Plus I think Ed also was a much more dynamic musician and known personality than Jerry Cantrell (who is great), so again I think people were just willing to be more accepting of keeping the name Van Halen. Eddie Van Halen, along with DLR were household names in rock. Whereas, despite how amazing AIC was as a band, the one thing people always remember about that band is the singer. In a lot of ways, Layne Staley to the common music fan was AIC. I completely disagree of course, considering how vital Cantrell's guitar and harmonies were, but I'm saying to the casual fan.

This is no slight to Dave, but I think VH being larger than life allowed them to get away with replacing him easier. But dude, for a lot of fans, it took years before they accepted Sammy. I was never sold on "5150" took me a long time.

The band being called "Van Halen" was Dave's idea according to Alex. Many of the Sammy fans that come in here fail to realize how much Dave had to do with that band from the very beginning. I get a sense from many that they feel Dave just walked into a situation ready-made.

I just found it humorous that the argument was being made.

I liked the guy who goes, "Van Halen went to new heights [with Sambo]". I can't believe anyone really honest to God believes that. Any serious fan of the band knows that so many of those "cool riffs" from Van Hagar songs were written during the Dave years, and I've pinpointed moments in Van HALEN concerts to prove it.

There's a big difference between changing singers and a singer dying. Eddie could've patched things up with Dave in '85, could've for the next ten years, and even did it briefly in '96. Angus Young and Jerry Cantrell won't ever get that chance. And I was a casual fan of AIC, never even heard of Layne Staley until he died. The only one I knew was Cantrell.

AC/DC is a poor example in this case. They *lost* their lead singer.

The replacement could do all the old songs just like Bon Scott. He was a perfect fit. The fans dug it. They went on to do great things. You heard them and went, "That's AC/DC"

Van Halen replaced their lead singer with someone who was better on a technical level but had no fire to speak of. Their sound completely changed. You heard them and went "Why is Neal Schon trying to sound like Eddie Van Halen?"

FWIW, AC/DC were damned lucky to find Brian Johnson. I don't think Alice In Chains could find another Layne Staley. He was as much responsible for their sound as Cantrell was.
