Eddies a great guitarist. The music is unique and the only good thing about the song. The lyrics suck. The singing sucks. The background vocals are not where they need to be in the tune, and the chorus completely drops the song.

Yeah I think the band sounds great. The song structure itself is average but I think the band sounds really tight and the guitar and drum sound is very good. Then again after twenty plus years together they should be tight. I think Al is a very underrated drummer, I think he plays better now than he did 15 years ago. Eddie on the other hand, doesn't rip it up the way he used to. He's changed, but his style changed way back on 5150. The only VH/Sammy fatass album I think Eddie ripped on was the FUCK album.
Let's face it if you're gauging it by how many notes eddie plays in his solo then go listen to Paul Gilbert or Michael Romeo from Symphony X. They're shredders.
What original tune by Roth(not counting anything before 1991) had a band that sounded or wrote anything on par with this?
I like Roth over Sammy fatass either way.
I think Me Wise Magic and Can't Get this Stuff no more, whatever the name is, is better than anything VH did with Sammy. I think VH should have kept Roth in the band in 1984-85 and in 1996.Last edited by street_lethal; 05-30-2004, 04:54 PM.Comment

I don't ask for shredding...I just ask for something that makes you go..."hey...this is the mighty eddie V."
the band doesn't sound "tight"...they sound dubbed...it's not organic...it's constructed...and not good at all...Roth Army Icon

I think Eddie's tone sounds good on the thrack and Al's drums. But as a whole it sounds processed. In fact that's what even bothered me about the shit they did with Roth back in '96, it sounded very processed.
This is assumption, but if you ask me I don't even think Mike is playing on that track, the unison lines between the bass and guitar sounds like Eddie playing both parts.
I don't know if you heard the Eddie interviews over at 2dorks.com from the past six months but he says in one that he's been playing all the instruments on the shit he has recorded so far. Then he says he hasn't talked to Mike(he calls him cat) in two years.Last edited by street_lethal; 05-30-2004, 06:03 PM.Comment

I don't mind a "polished" sound...some of the dave stuff sounds polished, too...what bothers me is, that you can really hear how the song is done by copy/paste's...it totally lacks the "hey, why don't you play it a bit more like...douhdidideeewaaaahh...in the brigde...?" "yeah, let's try"-attitude...it's all ed sitting in his shitty 5150 funny farm thinking, that he should also write the lyrics and sing it to be perfect...but...ed alone as a songwriter sucks (like he did on VHIII) even more than he did with the mediocre help of hagar...Roth Army Icon

Dave can't write by himself either though, and again excluding everything prior to 1991, I think the majority of the stuff he has come out with since 1991 has sucked. He had a few tunes/videos on his site last year and I thought those tunes were horrid as well.
We come full circle to what I originally mentioned in this thread or another thread, Eddie and dave wrote their best shit together.
I'm a fan of the original VH.... really what it comes down to for me.

I think people are getting carried away with this "It's just the lyrics and singing that suck' idea.
Ok it's pretty hard to get past that but underneath most important is the melody which is a disaster. I don't know how much of that is EVH and how much is Hagar but I'm guessing Hagar since it sounds like his shit.
Secondly the music is wrong. It doesn't flow or resolve properly. The parts don't flow and sound like 3 or 4 pretty average ideas badly pasted.
Don't give me the jazz/fusion dropped beat argument because if it doesn't work it doesn't work.
And thirdly the guitar solo is completely without merit, it sounds like me at 17 and I'm pretty shit now.
Oh and Eddie Van Halen needs a producer but then we've know that for 20 years.
Finally why do people keep using the word shred in relation to EVH on this song? I thought that meant fast or complex playing not plugging in some distortion.
Cheers!

The opening riff is a pure imitation of Metalicca. and veers off into different tangents with no structure. The song literally sounds like four different incomplete songs patched together with Spammy's screeching all over it with horseshit lyrics.
Eddie is only furthering my belief that as he gets older, his songwriting skills are becoming increasingly erratic, and his creativity is in decline.
Even if Dave were singing this song, it would still suck ass.
End of story.
If you honestly think this song is WORSE than 'How Many Say I' you are sadly mistaken.
The music is good and it really grew on me.
The lyrics are so fucking lame it isn't funny but it is what it is - Sammy Hagar.
I don't get how Hagar is pretty damn good as a solo artist but when he gets with VH the tunes are either REALLY GOOD or REAL HORSE SHIT.
This new song falls in the middle - EVH shreds and I like the tone but the lyrics are SO BAD.
I like the song now more than I did when I first heard it but it is still disappointing.
I expected MUCH more.

And what's with the shredding talk? You just made my point.
Cheers!
