What happened in 1984?

I just watched the 86 VH Unleashed Mtv special and feel kinda sick.
So, I was wondering - Is there an agreed upon 'version' of the CVH break up that gives insight as to what actually went down that led to it? I did a search, but didn't find anything. Thanks.

Well, the band toured until about August of 1984.

Roth put out Crazy From The Heat in late 1984/early 1985.

The band tried to rehearse for a follow-up album in Feb/March of 1985...

Think the break was just a long time coming, anyway...Roth says the band wanted to take a year to make the next record, breaking from recording during the summer of 1985 to play some stadium shows, which he claimes he wasn't interested in. Ed claims Roth wouldn't show up for rehearsals because he was busy promoting his solo album, and wanted the band to write the soundtrack for his Crazy From The Heat movie...

Roth basically quit, and I think it was because both he and the rest of the band were tired of dealing with each other personally. Probably had been for awhile, but although there had been musical conflicts in the past, the rehearsals for 5150 were the breaking point...

I'm sure some of it did have to do with Dave's ego, but the bottom line in the end was once they couldn't see eye to eye on the music, there was nothing left to hold them together.

Didn't Dave mention in his book he was ready to go on an album and couldn't get Ed sober enough to play guitar, so he opted to do the solo project?

Dave did say that Ed's boozing was getting way out of control around the time he left
