Dave was also pissed at the lack of productivity coming from the Van Halens.

Especially Eddie. Dave talks of the time where Ted and he were basically sitting outside Ed's house, waiting for him to pick up the phone, but he didn't -- Ed was either too drunk, passed out, or whatever.

So Dave didn't want to sit around. Then he decided to do another video for CFTH (he had already done California Girls) -- Gigilo came out and Eddie was even more furious about it this time.

Dave and the band continued to try to work on the new album --- somehow the chemistry, mostly due to Ed's vices, turned sour. Also, Dave didn't like the music that Ed was coming up with (stuff that became Love Walks In and Dreams).

Seeing that things weren't going well in the studio, Dave suggested that the band put out a greatest hits album with a few new tunes and play some summer stadium gigs to support it --- that was shot down by both Ed and Al.

The tension between them was too much --- Dave then quit -- he called Ed to come to his house and told him right there.

But Dave kinda hoped the split was temporary, I think, telling Ed that maybe somewhere down the road we can get together again.

On the flip side, I think Ted and Dave saw Eddie taking a little more control now that he had his own studio -- that could've been another reason why relations went sour.

Dave's Crazy From the Heat Project was a huge success and Dave saw how nice it was to work solo instead of having to deal with the drunken Dutchmen.

Dave figured while Alex and Eddie drank a case of Schlitz malt talls a day and smoked cigarettes in a dirty little studio, he would make a movie full of colorful people and beautiful girls.

I don't think Dave ever really planned on quitting VH but he figured with the Van Halens getting drunk off their previouse success and their wives wanting to spend the money, there would be some time to do some more solo projects.

Dave pretty much quit because of the brothers lack of work ethic and drunkeness.

But I don't think he thought that they would get another singer right away. He probably thought there'd still be a 'Van Halen' to return to at sometime.

I just can't see the Van Hagar stuff ever working with Dave. Edster would have said, hey Dave, check this out, I call it "The Inside!" Dave would have said, "Hey Edster, Fuck You man, you keep writing shit like that and I'm going to go up to the house and fuck your val."
