But he never out and out endorsed any candidate, or ever did any campaigning for them, until he started appearing at the same events Kerry was at in '04.

Every artist I've ever heard of who endorsed or appeared with politicians lost fans in the process. Obviously, he doesn't care, as he's got a ton of cash in his account, but he doesn't have as many fans as he used to, and it's one of the big reasons why.
