    Just curious.
I can only speak for myself.

when it first came out, it sounded too much like Journey

now, to me, it sounds like a Van Hagar tune, with Roth vocals. Ugh.

I don't know if it has anything to do with being a die-hard fan, but rather just the old fans [yes, that's me] -those that were there from the beginning. I can't imagine any of them choosing 1984 as their favorite album. I think there is a huge audience who "discovered" Van Halen when 1984 was released. You couldn't turn a radio on without hearing 'Jump.' Then they went backwards and listened to the rest.

Just not the same thing in IMO. I think those that discovered them in the early years recognized how unique and magical this band was and just how amazing those first records are.

I like a lot of 1984, but it just does not compare to the rest for me.
          Same ole song and dance...

AND...I think a lot of them are the ones that bought into the Hagar years. It's their fault. Bastards. :D

That was me, got into van halen after seeing them in the jump video in the pub and then went and bought all 6 lp's with my holiday money.
But i still went through it falling apart the same as everybody else.
And i still hated the hagar version the first time I laid my sorry eyes on it.

                          Why?

Maybe it's because it is the song that inspired me to take up drumming....

Well, thank you, sir! We would not all still be around 20 some years later if it were not about the music. There's not a lot of women here, but we are all true rock fans.
