dave's solo career started in 1985/6. it's really not possible for a hardrock band, and certainly not a solo act to stay around for 20+ years.
Don't care for the band but U-2 has been around 20 + years
and I think with the same douchebags.
And Def Leppard about 30 years only two members changed .
One was fired , one died , both lead guitar.
Has the Who ever actually broken up , or just taken long
breaks?
The Stones? I think their still kicking.
Peter Frampton , Styx , REO ( they played some "hard " rock)
Robert Plant still a headliner with or without Jimmy Page.
Ozzy?
Many other bands have reformed and tour .
Check out Vegas , alot of old rockers play there .
Dave just never found that combination of talent as a solo
to keep him on top.
The bottom line is this. Dave was at the point in his career where he was at best playing in 5000 seat venues. Dave wanted more. One last big blast to pad his wallet and ego.
No decent lead singer with their head screwed on right would step anywhere near the Van Halen bizarro brothers given their history. There was a time that most singers would have given their left nut to sing for Van Halen. I seriously doubt that is the case anymore.
It goes like this - Van Halen needs Dave and Dave needs them. With each other they are great once again. Apart they are only a great memory.
