One of my all-time favorites....
That i wont argue with.....not that i'm even arguing, but anyway. I'll tell you this...alot of people wanna slag Ed here. But i saw him both times at Philly this week....and he played his ass off. Both nights had him playing with alot of fire and abandon. He was rippin' out his trademark wide-stretch symetrical scale runs like a mofo, especially on night 2. His solos were great....he had so much energy, seemed to be having so much fun.....i'm really happy for him. I havent seen him be this fired up since 1989.
even though i'm pissed Dave isn't leading the band, i'm happy to hear that Ed is playing well and enjoying himself. I still love the guy. Yes, he has his problems, and a shitty attitude towards Dave, but he did give us some amazing music. I think I'll just pour all my anger out on Alex. He seems to be the jackass of the band anyway. :D
I saw the EEAS tour and it damn near changed my life...As a guitarist you can do no better than Vai..I will agree with the posters..he is never gonna do Eddie Van Halen justice....Alex and Eddie can "swing" better than any guys out there...they have it as hard as coltrane, basie, woody herman, Miles, Elvis...those two are freaks of nature with the capacity to play and feel rhythm that few rock guys can...in his own area NO ONE can touch Vai...same goes for the brothers VH ( I consider them a team)..Now the brothers need DLR to complete the package....a true original that is sadly overlooked in todays climate...the EEAS tour was big rock at it's finest..and Vai was the perfect guitarist at the time...loud , showy, and hot shit.....watch Steve in crossroads and tell me that guy is not the DLR of the 6 string.....tons of prescence, original as fuck, and the style and technique to back it up....Dave struck gold with that band....I remember when I first heard Yankee Rose on the radio...pretty much left Van Hagar in the dust...Dave needs to channel that spirit again with a top flight band ( not that his current band isn't good..I stood front row in Mt. Pleasant last year and DLR was in TOP FORM) and show the Bros. whose boss....I honestley think Nuno Bettencourt or Blus Sareceno could make the proprr followup to EEAS.....I dont' even hate Hagar...but it's obvious he turned VH to shit and is out of his league with that band....Dave never had a better time to prove himself than now. Come on Diamond...bring the big rock!!!

Vai...original as fuck back then? i beg to differ. He was ripping off Ed way big on EEAS....just focusing on the technique more than the soul. Ed does it all naturally...Vai makes me feel like i'm reading a graph chart when he plays.....and i can play Vai's shit, too. I like EEAS alot...but please....he tried to recreate VH.....made a little bit of a wave...then with each following album he sank lower in terms of his career.....although Skyscraper, to me, was actually a better record than EEAS. He tried some new things on that record...sure there were the Van Halen Sound-alikes (Hina especially...and, oddly enough, is one of my fav DLR solo tracks), but tracks like Damn Good, Skyscraper, and Stand Up showed some variety. He may not have shined brightly as a star on ALAE, but i think he hit the mark lyrically on some of those tunes.....Sensible Shoes being one example. I cant really say much for the rest of his efforts....DLR band had maybe a few listenable tracks...and anyone that doesnt realize Slam Dunk is the incestuous, rehashed child of a couple of old VH tunes (namely Full Bug) is kidding themselves. King of The Hill and WaaWaaZaat (sp?) were ok....Blacklight was awful......but...Black Sand.....there was a promising track. His latest mostly covers release doesnt deserve to be mentioned...i mean, he got away with doing an album of almost half covers in VH....but this late in his "career"? C'mon. He either needs to get his ass in the studio with the current band he has....IF they can even write tunes....and put as much effort into that as he did in his live sets i saw on the Sam & Dave tour. Y'all can forget Vai or Sheehan ever coming back.....it wont happen....there's actually a better chance of Dave appearing with Vh before this tour is over than that happening.
It's 2am, i'm beat, and i kinda left out my opinion of the alternatives from the part above in my post.....that being "or take acting seriously....until VH and he work together in some capacity again.....which will happen." I still love VH with Sammy, too....i'm just stating what i'm hearing and what i feel.

BS is one of my favorite DLR solo tracks. It has a magic to it that real Roth fans pick up on right away. I've even played it for non DLR/VH fans and they love it too.
Mezro...a place that's not on any map
Got me a date with a shaved Asian. I know, I know; I think it's fucked!
These ratings reflect how often I listen to the albums, top of the list being the most, bottom being the least. Felt obliged to throw the DLR Band on there, as even though it didn't have Steve Vai shredding on there I still dig the songs on the DLR Band just as much as EEAS.
Not saying Diver Down and 1984 aren't great albums, but as far as DD goes I usually only end up listening to Hang 'Em High, Secrets, The Full Bug and Little Guitars. With 1984 I end up listening to Drop Dead Legs, Hot For Teacher, Girl Gone Bad and House of Pain.
Originally posted by EddieFan4Eva I wont even bother rating....EEAS is a fun record...great playing....but it was truthfully Van Halen Jr. It doesnt even deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as any VH album. And as for the tour off that record......well....let's just say for having the caliber of musicians he had.....it was a sloppy mess overall. Especially the VH tunes.....god-awful.
EEAS is easily just as strong an effort as Diver Down or 1984.
