Van Halen is like that old messed up house down the street from when you were a kid with the overgrown grass, old paint, broken down cars, freaky people comming and going, the police their all the time, people yelling and fighting. But you still have to stare at it when you drive by for some reason.
... so what you're saying is van halen is naturally brilliant, but defective in other ways, and thus unable to sufficiently get its shit together to release some live material with the diamond man ...
... by the way, i think there's one exemption to the void of live dlr: didn't they release the video for hot for teacher in the u.k. as a live performance from a festival show?Comment

All I remember are the few brief snippets used for the Lost Weekend With Van Halen contest segment. Have no recollection of a full-length, pro-shot 1984 concert airing on MTV.
Outside of that, the only other 1984 tour footage I've seen is (as already mentioned) the Montreal show and the HFT Donnington clip.
Someone once said they had a video boot of the entire 1984 Donnington show, but they weren't able to come up with the goods when we got down to the nitty gritty of trading, and I've never seen a full-length Donnington video (not talking audio here) boot of the VH show listed on any other sites as being available, either for sale or trade.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment

You never know, though. The 1981 Memphis full-length concert video shot from the soundboard only surfaced in a big way over the last decade. There's no definitive "this is totally all the CVH footage available / nothing else is gonna surface ever" status as long as things are still leaking out.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment

Here's the one I was referring to, Montreal '84....

Well, there were three songs from the US Festival that were "officially released" as part of the Showtime TV special. Though that's never been on an official DVD, or probably even a VHS.
They do show up on YouTube once in a while though, until the Warner/RIAA trolls slap them down again........

Oh, I've got pretty much the entire US Festival on one of my Youtube playlists, just like Largo '82, and about half of Montreal '84....Eat Us And Smile - The Originals

Is it Live or is it Memorex ...
I think there are several possible explanations for this:
1. They never liked any of the shows they taped
2. Ed always argued that the 'albums were pretty much live anyway', so a live album would just be more or less the same, but have the sound of an audience tacked onto it.
3. DLR's full-body performance was part of the show - it can't really be captured on tape, 'coz it sounds like he's just fluffing his lines and missing the mic if all you go by is live sound recording -- but anyone who was there knows he was doing Air Roth, so the vocal performance was secondary to the show. It could be captured on film, but CVH really existed in a time before bands routinely filmed all their shows. They were essentially a 70s band - there's gotta be loadsa them that have no decent live footage
4. Ed doesn't give a fuck what the fans want, which I'll say is admirable. If he really wanted to milk us for cash he'd forget the crappy shoes and start releasing box sets a la Gene Simmons.
5. What's best - live or memorex? My theory is that, for DLR anyway, it is all about his sense of the importance of the aesthetics of impermanence. To get the essence of a live show - especially back when they were young and hungry - you had to be part of the audience. DLR always believed the audience was the spark for the show - I've heard some awesome boots (Greensboro, 1981) where it comes across, but do they have any of this stuff in good shape.
that - #5 is my theory - explored in my soon-to-be published treatise on the Philosophy and Aesthetics of Van Halen (circa 2012)THINK LIKE THE WAVESComment

There's plenty of great pro recordings and film from the Classic VH era. Most of it is still probably housed at Pacific Archives.
The number one reason nothing has ever been released is Ed ain't dead yet...
Ed's been either too lazy or too embarrassed of his drunk assed antics... plus too vain & self conscience to allow nonperfection to go out the door. I honestly think he's held it back for all these years because of his insecurity and anger with Dave. Now he's too chickenshit to confront his mistakes!!"If you want to be a monk... you gotta cook a lot of rice...”Comment
