The DLR Band sold 100,000 copies or so last time I checked.
I doubt the Diamond Dave release did much better.
Why would Dave even bother putting out material as a solo artist at this point when he's gonna sell that amount of records? Even putting the logistics of having to negotiate record deals (even with indie-style labels) to one side, just look at the pride factor: perhaps he figures with sales stats like those, the general public is gonna have the perception of him as a has-been.
Far as getting new music released since 1996, I'd say Dave and Eddie are more or less equal, with Roth perhaps winning by a hair (hey, realistically half of the Diamond Dave cd was a bit bunk). Far as energy and effort on display, Roth has been touring with a fair amount of consistency since 1999. What has Eddie done since the end of the Van Halen 3 lineup, excluding the Roth reunion? A few songs for another greatest hits compilation, a couple of tunes for a porn flick and a tour with Sammy Hagar. Hey, Ed may be recording stuff constantly at 5150, but it's all useless to me if I'm never gonna hear any of it.
I'd say the surface of things gives the impression of Ed being content to do fuck-all until he needs a cash fix on a scale that slapping his Franky logo on everything under the sun won't provide. Seems to happen about every 4 years or so.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment
