I just heard a Van Hagar song on rock radio here called 'Aftershock'???

First time I've heard it and a mental picture formed in my mind immediately.

Clarice Starling: [tears begin forming in her eyes] And one morning, I just ran away.
Hannibal Lecter: No "just", Clarice. What set you off? You started at what time?
    Clarice Starling: Early, still dark.
Hannibal Lecter: Then something woke you, didn't it? Was it a dream? What was it?
Clarice Starling: I heard a strange noise.
    Hannibal Lecter: What was it?
Clarice Starling: It was... screaming. Some kind of screaming, like a child's voice.
Hannibal Lecter: What did you do?
Clarice Starling: I went downstairs, outside. I crept up into the barn. I was so scared to look inside, but I had to.
Hannibal Lecter: And what did you see, Clarice? What did you see?
Clarice Starling: Lambs. The lambs were screaming.
Hannibal Lecter: They were slaughtering the spring lambs?
Clarice Starling: No it was Sammy Hagar singing a song called Aftershock and they hated it.
Anyhoo I digress, what a fucking mess the production on it was. I don't know if it's something to do with the rooms at 5150 or just that the Van Halen's cannot produce drums but whatever it is they need to sort it out.

Even if they somehow manage to come up with some good songs, it's going to be very distracting listening to Roth singing over what sounds like a drunk man in an alley kicking over trash cans disturbing nests of angry wasps.

That may be the first time that song has been on the radio, Deadwad should celebrate...

Killer guitar solo and some nice playing towards the end...

Good bass too, reminds me of Wolfie...

I could listen to Ed noodle around like that for days. But I was disappointed in the chorus of the song. Even with Michael Anthony singing, it sounded really, really flat. Like it was recorded in one of those $10 booths in Vegas where you sing along with a song. Weird for any era of VH with Anthony handling background for it to be so monotone & flat.

Definitely not a song that would get stuck in your head. Not catchy at all.

Oh, I am referring to the original studio recording from the cd. Not the live performance above.

Yesterday they played ATBL but a live version with Hagar singing.

I nearly phoned the station to complain before realising I need to cool it a bit about stuff like that...

So kind of like the Yngwie approach.

The song is a shitty annoying afterthought you have to listen to in order to get the guitar solo.

Never heard the song all the way through. But 1995 was probably some of the best playing Ed ever did because he was sober. Shame it was largely wasted with poodle-dick...

Elvis should have posted the album version recorded at 5150. To my ear it sounds much messier than the live version.

I had this theory that maybe they had lost the top end of their hearing over the years and that's why we get the ssshhhhhhhhhhh sound all the time.

Or maybe it's the gods of music coming across the ether asking Hagar to shut the fuck up.

Sounds like the DJ pressed the wrong selection on the CD player. This happened one time here when GnR were at the peak of their popularity. Rather than playing "Patience" from the Lies album, the guy inadvertently played "Reckless Life", which was a live recording featuring a profanity laced introduction. The hapless DJ was fired later in the day. Too bad that wasn't the case in your area.

In the mid to late 90's a friend gave me a video with the Van Hagar appearance on one of Jon Stewart's pre daily show programs. They did Aftershock and Amsterdam and the solo to Aftershock was absolutely unbelievable. It was some descending tapping move that you could swear the guy would land on his ass since it defied the timing of the song. It was a perfect example of what EVH used to describe as falling down the stairs and landing on your feet. The song itself wasn't really that compelling but you can't deny the guy's talent when he was on fire.
