it's been YEARS...and they are back together as a band, making music.
That alone is enough to be excited about!

John Shanks is mentioned in the credits to the Diamond Dave cd. I just so happened to fucking love the way that oddball of a record was recorded. Great depth of vocal tone and texture. I listen to Stay While the Night Is Young an aweful lot. I love the layers of Dave's voice right around the break. Dave is definitely why Van Halen should always be credited for picking up where the Beach Boys left off with the classic California sound of Summer. Anyways, I'll bet Dave was impressed with this guy, Shanks, enough to to say, "hey, do that again!"Comment

i have a feeling that what we are going to hear on the new VH record is something like THUG POP, ME WISE MAGIC and CANT GET THIS STUFF NO MORE which is fine with me but I hope that dave has taken care of his voice, recorded slow and maybe even worked with a vocal coach. Who gives a shit what his voice sounds like in concert... never was an issue back in the day. He needs to be on top of his game if he wants any success with this record. Not taken any responsibility off the Van Halen's and the shed they call 5150 of course. I think if they leave the production to the Producer and the Engineer they'll put a great product out.Comment

EVH producing????
WTF??
Not good, IMO.
My trust is fully with Dave. He would not let shit get released.
My guess is that Hogworth and even Shanks have been steering things in the right direction.=V V=

My main concern about Shanks producing Dave's vocals at a location somewhere other than where the band are working is that it probably means that Dave has little input on the music he then has to write vocal lines and lyrics for. It seems obvious to me from being unhealthily obsessed with this band for 30+ years and reading a lot about their creative process that when DLR was in the band first time around he, in effect, acted as a kind of producer where Eddie was concerned - i.e., he'd tell him to 'move that riff here to the chorus', 'ditch that part, it's too long', etc. etc.
Think of the difference between DLR's first solo album and the second, Skyscraper. Years later someone in an interview (it was Classic Rock magazine) asked him what happened to change things so much between those two albums - the answer? Vai recorded all his parts in his own studio and, lo and behold, got all self-indulgent and widdly instead of focusing on tunes. Here's a link to the interview, and the choice quote:
CR: What about your work with guitarist Steve Vai-did you approach those projects knowing that your writing partnership with him might be difficult to sustain?
DLR: No, I approached it like a dog does: everything is forever; you take me back home, I'm gonna look at you at the back gate and go, "But I thought we were going to walk forever?"
CR: So what happened? At the time, working with Vai and bassist Billy Sheehan seemed like such a masterstroke. You trumped everyone.
DLR: It ran into the dead end that is rock-fusion jazz-blues something or other, aka "widdley-widdley". When the guitarist starts going "widdley-widdley" it's a symptom. When I made those records with Steve it was an effort to get him to go under the bar; consolidate; give your guitar solo a beginning, middle, and end. What is the development of the character here? Is this guitar solo the same guy we met in the last three songs? Perhaps one is never so much oneself as when wearing the mask. And Steve's mask is that there is something greater than writing songs and simple emotional content.
If anybody in the music world needs a producer that has the authority to say, 'that's shit', it's a guy like that. Fading guitar hero whose mantle has become too much to bear all on his own.THINK LIKE THE WAVESComment

One thing people should keep in mind in the day and age of Pro Tools is, even though Dave's in another studio, he might have more overall input than you think...perhaps he's not only coming up with lyrics and vocal melodies, but also offering input on the arrangements as well (which can easily be manipulated after the fact by someone with serious editing skills). So maybe they're sending him the rough tracks and HE's doing more polishing on them than anyone here thinks...Originally posted by conmee

I agree, Jay......Dave has always had input into the songwriting process. Given the technology today he could of easily took the parts and moved them around, shorten stuff and a million other different things and not even be in the same country as Ed to do it.Originally posted by vandeleurE- Jesus . If I'm not mistaken, Fair Warning was recorded this way except opposite. Eddie would come in late night to do his geetar parts while the rest of the band was gone. Not sure if that would be the same as this. Also if you've seen the US Festival boots the sisiters play House of Pain?.. And its just riff stuff. it took Dave to come in with the hooks, melodies and maybe bridge to form the song... Hagar Did the same for them.
Maybe we'll get the product that everybody is hoping for but if it's not... Count classic VH DONE.
Be good if they could have a 10 year run like Aerosmith did their second time around but with Ed's past history we won't... to much work.Comment

It also presents a rather frightening scenario, in that once Dave completes his version of the album, it gets sent to Mr. Van Halen, who promptly redoes things to his own standards. The album is then sent back to Roth, who further tweaks things. Upon receiving Roth's final interpretation via Fed Ex, EVH again changes things to his satisfaction. When Dave hears this...
Years later, people start wondering whatever happened to that Van Halen album with Roth, much the same way they used to ponder whatever happened to Chinese Democracy.
