I think that a few yuears from now you people will be back pedalling a bit on some of this. The '96 tunes were pretty energetic and Dave's voice was still pretty strong. His voice is a mere shadow now (though still loaded with character). There is much wear and tear on those vocal cords. I think a lot of Dave's chirps and such over the years were inhalation chirps (made by inhaling air via the mouth rapidly and channeling it through the vocal cords) which is very damaging. Whispering is also known to be very bad for the voice but Dave never did much of that. I think a lot of the damage is irreversible and he often is going for things that he could hit in key before but no longer can.
The fact is that Ed really made a bad decision in 1996.
I've been a Van Halen fan for a long time and would love to have to eat crow and say that the record is great but so far, from what I hear it is not. It is mediocre from what I have heard so far.Last edited by smorgdonkey; 01-28-2012, 08:47 PM.Comment

So far so good with the new tunes....they all sound killer....and some of them we have already been familiar with for years so we already know they are solid. Let's just relax a bit with the whole 7 pack conversation. CVH 1978-1984 was a moment in time that will never be re-captured again. We should just let that be.....let it be glorious and amazing because it was. This is a new era for this band and that's a good thing. There is no doubt a classic VH feel to it still but it's different, heavy and kick ass as always. I don't really know just how to put it into words. Does this album really have to be part of a "7pack"? Let's leave it alone and let it kick ass on it's own. If this was all 4 members of the CVH era maybe you can say 7 pack....and that's not a knock on Wolf at all cuz I happen to think he can play his ass off. It's the dawn of a new day, a new era for the Mighty Van Halen....let's just leave it at that for now. Maybe over time we can include this new album with the classic 6 pack but for now just enjoy the piss out of it.
My thoughts exactly!!Comment

I'm a big fan of the 1996 stuff as well. "Me Wise Magic" melted my brain when I heard it, especially after all those years of Hagar. That chorus of that song was just fucking amazing. If they had went on tour then, they would have put the 2007-2008 tour to shame $$$-wise. Like others have said, a golden opportunity was blown. Dave's voice may have been better then, it's hard to tell. Eddie was still drunker than a skunk though, so it would have self-destructed sooner or later.Comment

Good to fucking see you...welcome back..."Van Halen was one of the most hallelujah, tailgate, backyard, BBQ, arrive four hours early to the gig just for the parking lot bands. And still to this day is. It's an attitude. I think it's a spirit more than anything else is."Comment

I 100% agree with you about the 96 tunes...
I love the electric few that bash on those two songs with their poindexter voices...
"Um, yes, those songs just weren't up to par..."
Makes me laugh...
I don't fucking care who wrote it, why it was written, when it was written, and if Elmo from Sesame Street produced it...
Dave can turn shit into pure fucking gold...and you throw spED into the mix...and visions of fucking sugarpussy dances in my head..."Van Halen was one of the most hallelujah, tailgate, backyard, BBQ, arrive four hours early to the gig just for the parking lot bands. And still to this day is. It's an attitude. I think it's a spirit more than anything else is."Comment
