Official "A Different Kind of Truth" Album Review Thread
How does the vinyl version compare with the CD in terms of how it sounds? Does it give you more of that 'old school' feel? I'm thinking of getting a copy.
The vinyl is not hugely different from the CD...but there are some subtle differences. Overall, the mix is clearer and not as muddy as the CD - you can hear more separation between the instruments. I notice more hi-hat and cymbals on the vinyl. And maybe a little more bottom end. It's a little more dynamic than the CD, but still quite a bit of compression happening.
I like having vinyl records for the physical product, the packaging and the ritual of throwing down a slab of wax and listening to full album in order, from start to finish. I'm not a big fan of the sound quality of vinyl if it's the exact same as the CD versions. Some people got to have vinyl for the sake of vinyl, even if it's not as clean as a CD, but I'm not like that. I'll pick whichever is the best-sounding version, in my opinion, and that is what lives on my iPod and gets listened to the most, in the car, on headphones, etc. And for me, the vinyl version of ADKOT is the definitive one to have. Even if you don't own a record player, there are digital rips of the vinyl to be had out there on the internets, that beat the CD.
By the way, the vinyl packaging is top-notch. Metal flake silver & gold printing and the front cover is embossed. Here's some pics I took of the record:

Damn, damn! That is a fine looking album. I am seriously considering this - Zing has a b-day coming up...hmmmmmm..... wonder if I can talk Mrs. Zing into a vinyl of ADKOT when we don't even have a turntable in the house. To me this is like investing in a piece of art - it's that beautiful.

Thanks - and also for the photo of the album. I love the impact of the artwork on a full size vinyl package - that will be another reason why I get a copy.
