I fucking care for $ 170 bucks !!! He looks lame with his what did you call it ?? Flinging arms ? Grab a mike and sing your ass off !! PERIOD. Head set is stupid !! They sound like shit.

There's no dynamics to them and they tend to sound thin. Anyone that uses them has highly processes vocals. You just can't go wrong with a good ol Shure 58 and that had been Dave's staple mic for years.

Gotta look at it like this: I've paid what? 20 bucks a CD. Played all 6 albums easily over 100 times each. 20 cents for 1/2 an hour. $170 for the show doesn't seem so bad now.
So keep ya fucking headset on Dave. This is possibly the only band I'd happily pay big coin to see. Do whatever the fuck you want - play it Vegas style, skit-skat-bippedy-bop-top-of-the-pops-with-the-beat for 45 minutes, bath your dog Russell, play poker with the 3 Van Halen chaps, show slideshows of medical crap you're interested in, hold your hand out to the crowd and just grin for 15 minutes to kill time, poonce around and do that streamer routine. It's gotta be better than any other band for that price - and I'll sook about them (Def Lep $125, now that was SHIT, headset or not!) Not Van Halen, who have had a steady gig in my ears for years.

Absolutely! I was hoping to catch some of Cheap Trick, but ironically I walked in and my first vision was Zander saying "thankyou goodnight!" Hated the songs. They were all the Hysteria sugar-coated-mid-paced shit. I walked out for a piss about 4 songs from the end. Came out into the foyer and just stood there for a minute, refused to go back in. I was hoping for some early stuff, high n dry, but all they did was "Bringin' on the heartbreak" which was a let down for me.
I don't like Phil Colen at all.

I don't hate it , it just sounds like I do. There is no reason all fucking at all for him to use them !! At all !! Looks stupid, Sounds worse !! Dave has enough problems singing he doesnt need to do it through junk !! Case closed !

As much as I think the headset mic is completely Anti-Cool David Lee Roth, I think the bigger concern here is Dave's singing... period.
For the record, I am a Full On Rothtard, Dave Or Grave... to me there are only 7 Official Van Halen Albums and 2 Best Of Songs...

And ADKOT is a fucking MONSTER listen... not a bad song on the CD and possibly the best songs #2 - #9 ever...

So, with apologies to ELVIS (even though I am agreeing with him), who has much disdain for my long posts (see ADKOT CD review thread, lol) here goes:


For me, on the 07/08 Tour Dave's voice was still STRONG and commanded the POWER... he REALLY got himself in amazing vocal shape and sang very "smart" (was there a few hints of him straining on nights?, of course... every singer (including myself) gets a bit penisy and tries to 'go that extra step' every once in a while and so what?)

Ever since I saw Cafe Wha? his voice seems VERY fragile... as someone who has been singing for 28 years, I feel there is something not 100% right going on here ... hard to explain, and maybe I am totally wrong and Dave sounds amazing and my ears are fucked... but I don't think so... it seems that even when he tries to stay in the mid-range (which is MUCH better than straining to go into octaves that aren't even on the original songs) he is very shaky... maybe Father Time has caught up with The Diamond One... and so be it... BUT, for purposes of a discussion here, and with all due respect to all who think he sounds phenomenal, I disagree...

That being said, I am surprised about the headset mic... and yes, it is a valid point... I know many Guitarists who are headcases where if the strap is not set right they cannot play... does it make them right? Who knows, but it is a habit, a comfortable zone that you are used to... I know it would be strange if I didn't have a mic in my hand live and I feel it would affect the 'familiar way' I am used to performing... but that is me and I am definitely a headcase singer... but when I sing, I am used to (for the most part) my arm being a certain angle with the mic, which affects my posture, which affects the airflow and constitutes how my body is used to producing power to get the notes out... a headset mic, for me, would change that a bit, thus possibly changing the way my body processes... now, maybe for Dave it doesn't matter and more power to him... just that I find it strange he is trying something so different at this time when there apparently may or may not be vocal issues (along with the weird Steve Martin in The Jerk moves, but I digress)...

I thought the last Tour killed...
Then the worry was "can they (Dave) bring it in the studio"... and that answer is YES because ADKOT is a MONSTER!!!
However, in regards to what I (and apparently others) have seen, this time around is a bit off...

I'll still be there April 10 at the Bank Atlantic Center...
