Not even a band like Van Halen would do that... The closest they've come is when they played "Hot For Teacher" as the 2nd song in 1984....

And HFT was a pretty major hit for them, especially as a video.....

But the first song is not the time to give the fans a new song, it just isn't....
Roth opened with Bottom Line on the Skyscraper tour, I agree it's not a great idea.

Personally, I don't think it's a bad idea to lead off with a new song. There is no point when the crowd will be more excited than when the lights first go down and the band comes on stage and I think it's a great time to sell them something new.

Nah , Metallica had pulled ahead of Maiden in the States by that time

Doesn't make much difference which Metallica song they play...

Comparing Metallica to Iron Maiden is like comparing Chickenfoot to Van Halen. When Maiden's Ed Force One lands on US soil, Lars and the boys should be there to carry their bags and shine their shoes.

Iron Maiden s/t debut thru Seventh Son
All classics in my book from both bands , I'm not saying ones better than the other just that Metallica became the bigger band .Given the opportunity I'm sure James and Lars would jump at the chance to shine Steve and Nickos shoes

The whole "better" thing is part personal preference of course but I think Iron Maiden has maintained a certain level of excellence for a prolonged period of time (which I think is a valid way to assess greatness) while Metallica peaked and fell back to earth somewhat.
