...And what band doesn't rag on their singer in rehearsal, anyway?
Spot on. I also think its interesting how both Dave and Ed have made some musical analogies to Beethoven, both completely different, in their interviews throughout time. Dave's were always about mass familiarity in a pop culture sense and Ed's were always along the lines of "hey, there's music going on behind the words ya know". Just one more example of how these to creative minds belong together. One is left brained, the other is right.

So embarrassing that Pretty Woman by VH became a hit.

Then he popped on his tune "You Make Me Crazy" and said to himself, "waitaminute. Do I really suck this bad?"

glad to see many are aware and willing to admit that Eddie has never given DLR his due. There has been a lovefest for Eddie on this tour but it's obvious to me at least that Eddie (in his mind) looks at Roth as a necessary evil. After the 04' tour with Bette Midler, uh I mean hagar, played many half full arena's (LITERALLY) the writing was on the wall for Eddie. There was no other viable choice but to call DLR. Eddie admitted in an interview a few yrs ago that he instructed Alex to get Roth in the fold once more after rehearsing with Wolfe several times. Of course Roth wanted to do it but I find it ironic that in the final stage/scenario it was Eddie reaching out to Roth to finalize the reunion (yes I know about the several failed previous attempts between the 2 camps). The bottom line is that for arguably most people when you think of Van Halen if Roth isn't the first thing to come to mind he's the 2nd (behind only Eddie). For me it's Roth. His presence has always been so powerful and overwhelming that when I think of VH he's the first thing to hit my mind. The rock press has always hated Roth but remember, Eddie himself is responsible for a lot of the DLR bashing that goes on to this day. EVH consistently bagged on DLR in the press long after the initial breakup/fued in 85'/86' was really over. Every time I picked up a mag with EVH in it and they asked him about DLR or the classic stuff he always took time to slag Roth and say he couldn't sing (not true) and clearly imply that Roth had no talent. Dave for his part basically ignored the whole thing after about 86'. You would occasionally hear him take a dig but it was nothing in comparison to the VH camp (Eddie/Alex). I'm going to see VH next week and I'm looking forward to it. Saw them in 07' and loved it. Interestingly DLR and Wolfe were the most consistent parts of the show I saw in 07'. Eddie looked and played tired that night and Alex doesn't have nearly the power he once possessed though he can still certainly pull everything off. I'm always aware though that Eddie has Roth there because he has to have him. If Eddie could pack arena's without Dave he would get rid of him in a second. I have no doubt. I'm not intentionally trying to start a mud throwing contest, I'm glad VH are back with Roth. The truth is the truth though, and I don't believe Eddie has ever respected Roth. That along with the fact that Van Halen are superior with Roth at the mic is why I will never support the brothers with any other singer. I saw VH in 86' and I saw the EEASmile tour and Roth blew VH away. I love VH but I also know that a significant part of the reason Roth gets little respect from the press is because of Eddie and Alex's constant 20+ year bashing.

I may have posted this before, but as far as Dave and Eddie go, the accuracy of this statement is 100% dead-on....

"You can wonder what David Roth and Eddie Van Halen are doing in the same band. It's hard to imagine two guys with less in common psychologically, yet together they seem to make a complete personality. Extrovert balanced by introvert. Logic balanced by intuition. Entertainment balanced by artistry" - Charles Young, Musician magazine, 1984

Dave's always maintained he was a "self-made muso" and his love for Ed (& Al's) sound has always been obvious through the many interviews he has done over the years. I've never seen that love reciprocated by High And Mighty King Edward.
I suppose Ed letting Dave touch his stuff in the first place is confirmation enough. (I just don't think I can picture Ed in the studio patting Dave on the back over anything, that's all.)
I know the guy is shy, I just hope behind closed doors he's making Dave feel worthy. I didn't enjoy the "eye-rolling" part of the recent interview of EVH posted. You're just a guitarist remember, without Dave you'd be nothing but a cooler more savage Satriani which would never have netted you the $$$$$ and pussy and blow that Dave helped you get.

True, they have been together for 40 some years. Do we always give the ones close to us the verbal adulation that they deserve. Of course not, we just are so use to them and we don't always see them in the same light as others do because we have grown so accustom to them being them. Case in point, at the Rosemont show, Dave pointed to Ed while he was kicking ass and put the number one gesture up in the air. Ed soon looked at Dave and shook his head and gave him the gesture right back while pointing at at the crowd.

Hey psycho, please get out of my Van Halen T-shirt before you jinx the band and they break up.
