Wah Wah.....Van Halen is a nostalgia band...wah wah. Dude if your going to attack me on a personal level, at least consult Elvis first and try to learn how to be witty and entertaining about it. The reason it's not o.k. for Mike to do a side project, let alone a side project with Sammy is because the name of the band is called Van Halen.....not Sobieski. Wah wah....there's no proof Wolf wrote a single note on the new album. The second I saw Wolf killing it at the Cafe Wha gig I knew this kid was legit. Get the fuck over it you kant. 28 friggin years pass without a kick ass Van Halen album and morons like you are crying for Mike Anthony? You would think the guy is Steve Harris for crying out loud! I think these days it's just not useful for me to judge the current incarnation of Van Halen against the standards of excellence set by CVH.
The last two times/tours around I saw the band, I set my expectations not much higher than having a good night out, and on that count the band basically delivered.
To be sure, there were/are points in both recent tours where signs of age and self-abuse are on display. There were also an equal amount of instances where flashes of the old magic and brilliance were easy to see.
It's just difficult at times for me to reconcile the state of the group now vs. "back in the day"...probably because I still get so much pleasure out of the old records and various boots of the old tours. All in all, I think ADKOT was a strong record and the band are still capable of giving solid live performances. When I think of the amount of rock bands who were contemporaries of CVH and are still plodding away, yet are unable to deliver anything new that even remotely measures up to their vintage material and are just busking onstage, Van Halen 2012 is still operating on a level far above the rock bands around them. Perhaps not surprising, since it's always been that way, at least for me.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment

You're such a puppy when it comes to Van Halen. Guarantee ya I've seen them in their prime. Have you? Oh right, you probably grew up with Van Hagar! Get over yourself hotshot. What's missing now is that old vibe, that old atmosphere, the swagger they had back then. VHIV is mailing it in compared to how it used to be done. Mike's stage presence, if nothing else, was a big part of it. You (and many others) disavow one member to move on with another. That is exactly what EVH was hoping for, that you would forget about Mike and accept his son. That yarn spun by their PR (if you could call them that) about young Wolfgang saving the band and getting dear old pop off of the sauce was lame. I didn't buy that for a second. It was told to take some of the heat off of the fan backlash about Mike getting the boot. Nothing more than that too. Oh, I"m sure WVH probably mentioned in passing that he much preferred the Roth era better, but that was it. So humorous to see how many fell for that bullshit story. WOLF SAVES THE DAY!! LMAO!
I mean, most around here are blinded by hatred for Mike because he played alongside Hagar, the enemy. Mike has amazing improv skills, able to play in any format, with a fantastic harmony sound that made for a trademark Van Halen style. You're not getting that now. Let's face it, the only reason Wolfgang got the job was because his last name is Van Halen. I think his personal style is more along the lines of a "lead" player too. Ed just let Wolf do a lot more than he allowed Mike to do. It's obvious. Wolf is a solid bassist, but he still has a long way to go. I don't get this "Second Coming of the Messiah" treatment he is receiving around these parts. He's still no Jaco Pastorius as some would have you believe. I'd say he's mixed louder and things are busier due to his style, but definitely not inventive.
It's funny, so many here try to justify Wolf's placement in the band by Mike's ouster and association with Hagar. He would still be there today had EVH just taken the time to inform and the VH Bros would have got off of their lazy dead asses and worked. Keep trying though. Whatever floats yer boat Chief.
Glad I can say that I've seen the real deal Van Halen and not a watered down version. ADKOT is so compressed it's not funny.

I have no problems giving Wolfie the credit where he deserves it. Was he 100% responsible for keeping his Dad sober in recent years? No, but he certainly helped in that endeavor. Was he 100% responsible for getting Dave back in the band for one-and-half tours? No, I'm sure Ed and Al's bank account getting low on funds had lot more influence in that decision. Was he 100% responsible for ADKOT being a solid album? No, but he played his bass parts with good technical skill and has decent backing vocals. Look at the FACTS with objective thought and reason --- stop nuzzling Wolfie's ballsack so much.
Too many putrid history revisionists in here who wanna quickly dismiss Mike Anthony as an incompetent hack who couldn't write a lick of music without EVH coddling him like a baby from Day 1. What a crock of SHIT. Mike was a good musician who was there from the very beginning and amply proved his worth over 30 years of touring to sold-out arenas, 11 studio albums (6 are iconic), and always being a great bandmate by shrinking into the background to allow Dave and Eddie to be the marquee stars. Just because he chose Hagarita in the latter part of his career because the sisters were fuddling around as usual doesn't give anyone the right to diminish his accomplishments in a legendary rock band.
Wolfgang is NOT the future "King of Van Halen" ---- he's a pretender to the throne until he can prove he can consistently compose stellar music like his Daddy did many years ago. Until then, I've seen YouTuber teens with more technical skills and vocal abilities than the already-crowned young Messiah of VH.

I have never been a hater of Mike Anthony.....I think he was great with CVH....amazing vocals and underrated bass player with great stage presence. The only thing I was trying to say is stop getting your panties in a bunch and get the fuck over it already. Mike isn't coming back. Facts are facts --- Wolf is involved with only 1 album and 1.5 tours --- Mike Anthony was involved in 30 years of VH, 11 studio albums, and many sold-out world tours.

Where did I say WVH was a "slouch?" Nowhere, is the correct answer. I'd say he's progressed quite a bit since the first tour, but he's still not overwhelming.
Living in the past you say? No, Mike will never be in VH again. That ship has sailed thanks to EVH no less. He sealed Mike's fate for him because of his pettiness. I have been simply relating how I view the breakdown of events leading up to that and nothing more. Some don't want to hear it though, and you're certainly one of them. Now that you (and everyone else) has been given a new album and a tour, you'll forgive 'ole Ed for any wrongdoing he may have done. Some of you are like a content, pacified baby in that sense. For years, the pacifier was missing, and people were crying foul. Suddenly, all is right in your world again and EVH gets a free pass. I think the guy needs to be held accountable for his actions at some point. That's just me though. Him having the audacity to remove Mike's picture on the album covers at the official site was like the lowest thing he could have ever done. Totally classless of him. He may have not liked Mike anymore or wanted him in the band, but no way should he have ever resorted to removing him from their history.
Finally, this wasn't about me wanting Mike back in the band as the thread title suggests. The only way that would even happen is if EVH apologized to Mike over things or WVH leaves. We know that neither is gonna happen. The only ones who want this thread shut are the ones with a pacifier and a "contented" look.Comment
