As far as the setlist grumbling goes, 75% of that is us being spoiled by youtube and 25% is simply the band not mixing it up more. I've looked back on their glory days setlists on setlists.fm and like now, they were fairly static. The difference is that we weren't able to watch some or all of those shows like we can now. Like everybody else, i'd love it if they cycled As Is and LUTS in to the set, but it just doesn't bother me if they don't.
I personally don't give a crap about pyro and lasers and whatnot so their minimalist staging is fine by me. I will say that i think the lighting has been distracting for these shows, especially as depending on the angle, the lights negate the jumbotron, basically rendering it useless as you can't see what the hell is being shown.
I'm optimistic. As long as Dave's voice doesn't degrade to a Plant level, I can live with unevenness from him. Viva Van Halen!Comment

The big money these days is made from touring and not from releasing albums or singles. If they want to top up their pension funds they have to tour and charge $200 for a ticket.
I'd like them to cut down the touring and get Dave and Wolfie to go through the vaults and supervise a program of live DVDs, deluxe album reissues etc. Every other major band exploits there back catalogue to the full and I don't mean releasing a best of every 5 years or the 6 pack in cardboard sleeves and a box with no previously unreleased tracks.Comment

All the talk about 50 or so dates around the world next year doesn´t surprise me, even though I´m not holding my breath for it. To go back to the states they would have to bring a whole new show, new setlist, new stage and maybe even a new (old) bass player not to mention a new album/ new songs for it to not look like cache grab, and that would take a whole lot of time and effort which I really don’t see happening, they are just too comfortable on their own and uncomfortable together.
So to me the only foreseeable/logical future for the once mighty is to take the show round the world giving this Japan kind of shows to those who haven’t seen them, South America, and festivals in Europe.Comment

Are you telling me that you would go out to a Nascar event or dinner and a movie with your spouse and spend 100-200 bucks, but you're not going to see the Halen show when they roll into town? Are you crazy? On principle that Mike isn't in the band?Ok...suit yourself. I went to three shows last tour and I feel I cheated myself.

But, I know these days a fook'n scripted acted story line vid may cost a couple million dollars the way DLR would put one together..and there probably isn't much return investment these days ..back when MTV would boost your album sales. The internets may have squashed the band, "video sales tool".
It woud have to be done for a historical perspective of a nice thing to do for the fans and then like one new song on a album have the vid sold with a DVD of all of the CVH videos in HD compilation style.
Re-issue remasterd CVH videos. Wth a new one to peak some interest.
I'd buy it.

Dave started this tour awfully with the headset vocals, rants etc but steadily improved and made a significant leap in Japan.
I only gripe is the staging. The sense of humor they once had is no longer represented. Plus they simply did not put enough into the staging. Great screen show some classic pics, have some fun with it. Dave persona wise I think he is such a strong flavor sometimes less is more but let him have at it with the video, musically the jams work for this band a little more of that. They need to learn how to have technology and staging help them otherwise what is absent can make them seem old without something else to compensate.
The band is pretty solid so I don't think done but in need of an update.Comment

Older acts then Van Halen cash in on their name all the time, why should they not do the same? I agree DLR isn't the same singer he was but a touring VH with Dave on vocals is better then a VH tour without him. If this leads to another album then I'm all in. Even if it doesn't it is better then Fagar fronting them.
If the other acts were doing it at the same level as VH, they would likely be subject to the same criticism.Originally posted by perilouspete

I think that this whole issue is simply a testament to the public's voracious appetite for "what's next." We have grown so accustomed to new and different things flying at us from every direction that we now expect the same from mere mortals like the boys in VH.
And I say "mere mortals" simply to make a point. In my book Dave, Ed, and Al are "Rock Gods."
It's hard to believe that not that many years ago we would have given our first born children to see a Roth-fronted VH again, and we said we could listen to the 6 packs songs live over and over again ad infinitum. We could all die happy.
Well, it happened and now we're realizing that virtually none of us are even close to "dying happy." We're not sated...we want more, and it has to be new and different.
I'll admit that I'm hopelessly divided in my feelings. Some days I'm OK with the status quo. Other days I want to smack them in the head and tell them to stop resting on their laurels and get moving in a slightly different direction. I want to tell them that they've more than satisfied the masses and the casual fans...and they'd better to something special for the diehards and the hardcore fan base or else it will all go to shit.
But if the only alternative is retirement, then I'll stick with the status quo.
