Not crazy about the do-over idea, but how ripping would a new version of The Full Bug be? No dis on Dave's blues harp, but that double barrel solo Ed delivered live was fucking sweet!
A compilation of semi-obscure, metal-ish cuts? Sure, package it and call it Van Halen-The Hard Stuff. It would serve as a terrific introduction for folks with a new or merely casual interest in the band. But come on, for the majority of us here, there is no such thing as an obscure VH tune, seeing as we all seem to know the group's catalog inside and out, having lived and died with it since sometime in the late seventies.

Reason: I'm hung over, as usual...
Pissed off. Not happy about it. Not interested in it. etc etc.
Def Leppard is a different thing entirely - they worked and worked on those songs and they were studio confections. Not that there's anything wrong with that - but Van Halen, on the six albums (even 1984) what you have are pretty much performances. So, the recordings capture a specific MOMENT in time, when the band clicked and they got a good take.
It's the total antithesis of working something over in the studio until 'you get it right'. So, I could only imagine that re-doing those songs would never in a bazillion years capture what is eternal about the originals. I think the closest to doing them again, is just recording them live at a show.
I mean ... listen to the intro to 'Mean Street'. That might be the most jaw-dropping moment in rock guitar there is. Period. You can't DO IT AGAIN. Eddie did it one night when he had to sneak into the studio, and all his fckn anger and frustration came out.

So very true. However, the completist in me would buy "Van Halen-The Hard Stuff" on the day of it's release... I like having packaging and artwork. I have actually made a Van Halen compilation CD with absolutely NONE of the "hits" in the past. I'll have to find that and provide a track listing. I'm sure the disc is laying around somewhere.
I like to pay close attention to the things I'll forget later...
