Let’s look at this from Eddie’s point of view for minute.
Eddie isn’t jealous or complementary toward David Lee Roth. But Eddie just revealed something we all knew: Eddie is consumed with David Lee Roth. Roth is in waking thoughts and Roth is there to put him to bed.
Eddie wants us all to believe that Van Halen fans are like KISS fans, but they aren’t. KISS can rotate whomever they choose behind makeup and some pyro. Eddie Van Halen is naked in front of the world and he’s bending over, not knowing it.
Eddie wants us to believe he doesn’t listen to anything but what comes through him. If that’s the case, his Enya CD collection must belong to Val.
I my opinion Eddie, you haven’t been able to move forward or recapture past energy or presence. Since Roth’s departure, you have based your entire existence on a premise that Van Halen is bigger than the singer standing in front of the audience. Part of your therapy exercises should be telling you that this not the case and your bipolar behavior is the telling factor. All the asskisseres around you aren’t helping either.
What Eddie is trying to say with all the bravado is he would be happier playing clubs. And that’s where Van Halen is headed after this tour if they do not get David Lee Roth back in the band.
Since you’re not listening to music or your therapist Eddie try Emerson:
Do the thing we fear, and death of fear is certain.
Eddie will have to go back and confront his past if he ever wants to move forward. Roth is your reason Eddie. Don’t fear, fear not and quick freaking out.
Eddie is looking more and more like the headcase and Dave is looking MORE like the "REASONABLE" guy.
If Dave is a “miserable human being”; it takes one to know one.
Get a grip and get Dave back. Dave is Van Halen when he’s in the band or not.

Eddie Van Halen is just not a very bright guy. A few years ago, he was doing that goofy God-hands-me-tunes routine. It's the type of stuff empty-headed people latch on to easily. He's a good candidate for a cult, really.
You have to love the way he is still crutching on all of his old interview habits too - talking about how he can't read music, etc etc. He calls the guy to bust his chops, and ends up bragging about himself. He also hands the guy enough damaging P.R. to make that tepid review look flattering. I mean, the guy totally savaged Ed by printing this interview, but he deserved it.
I think Ed is pissed about Roth because there's a lot of pressure on him right now to prove to the industry that Roth ISN'T important to the equation. He's basically trying to re-do the Best of Van Halen package which originally was to tour with Roth, this time using Sammy and calling it a reunion. If you look at the setlist of the Cherone tour, it was obviously a Dave tour with Gary standing in.
So Ed is reading reviews bashing the lyrics of his new tunes (that stings too, because it was grounds for canning Sammy last time) and that they can't pull off the old material - and he's dreading that his hypothesis (I Am Van Halen) is starting to be openly challenged - and it's got him worried.
Because it's true.Last edited by famac; 07-19-2004, 01:18 PM.Comment

If God is so busy writing the songs why do they suck so much? Also, I would imagine if God gave me completed songs I wouldn't have to be up until 3am recording them. I don't have his experience or tools, yet I can knock out songs a lot quicker on my computer that he can in his full blown studio and those are songs already given to him by GOD! I have to write mine. Lastly, if EVH is so busy writing ( recording since we know God is actually writing VH material) that his marriage crumbled, where is all of the music? He put out 3 songs in how many years? And they all suck. Those songs sound like he spend 10 min a piece on them.Comment

That post really put a lot of things into perspective. And man, Ed is desparate to prove something that is so clearly not true.Roth Army Militia

Can you imagine calling a critic at 3 A.M. to tell him God gives you your muse, so stop picking on me? Eddie Van Halen has traditionally blamed other people for things screwing up on him (Dave primarily, and Sam at more lucid moments).
But now, instead of portraying himself as the victim, he's decided he's above criticism entirely..Comment

Calling up some nameless critic in the middle of the night to whine about a bad review.
Shit, after 25 + years in the biz, you think if Ed had any confidence, he wouldn't give a shit what the critics have to say. Same goes for overreacting any time Roth and Van Halen are mentioned in the same sentence in print.

Looks like the ghost of DLR is haunting Ed. That interview is most revealing. He is freakin cracking up and sees himself an 'instrument of God' (so he's kind of like a musical Mother Teresa?). For someone that complains about Dave having an ego, looks like EVH has manifested a quite delusional ego around himself. At least Dave gives credit that "...we did it together".
In addition, I remember Ed went through another period of self discovery around the time of Balance I think. He talked about being '...in the light' and '...accepting his position in the light'.
He is going thru another personal revelation apparently, but I offer this. Ed just get over yourself! You are a great guitar player (musician) and not much else. You are too rich now to be in touch with normal human beings, and you stay drunk all the time. Like a lot of common people, you have maybe one redeeming factor, one thing that makes you tick and feel good about, and it makes you stand out, but again, just get over yourself. Please.
