Dave never criticized anyone for doing Vegas shows or bluegrass music. HE CELEBRATED IT! Since you're a little of what we call "special," I'll spell it out for you. My point is about musicians being faux-purist dicks crowing about legitimacy, right before they bend over to put out a desperate power-ballad hit-ploy. Even front of Van Halen Dave was a bit cornball, and God love him for it! And fuck any pretentious douchebag that takes himself seriously.

And don't you have a Journey concert to go to so you can meet your Filipino dreamboat backstage?
I got your point little nicky, once again you get blind with rage if anything less than fawning is ever written about Dave. Yes, ol' Dave "celebrates" Vegas style and Bluegrass style. Much as he "celebrated" the big band sound of the Boston Pops, man he got those 50 somethings to lose their minds especially when he busted out the twirly stick. Dave isn't faux purist, I give him that. But these 3 areas that he dabbled with were every bit as calculated as the guys who put out those power ballads you wrote of. He did those things to get his name back out there, the Pops thing was a big audience, perfect opportunity to stay on the radar. The country stuff? Painful but ol' Dave thought maybe there was a new audience to tap into. Deny it if you want but he had a little Nashville Country Dave schtick working for a bit. Maybe Assh can bring Dave down under and teach him to blow on his didgeridoo. Hardrock96 can cover it in one of the many threads that feature him, maybe include some road story anecdote as ol' Dave celebrates yet another muscial sound. Little nick, sounds like the Journey posters came off your wall when Pineda signed on. Obviously a purist.

As far as 5150 goes, I like the music of the guitar oriented tunes. The keyboard tunes? Not so much. As a whole they just sounded like a different band. The "sound" of the band is just different, which is understandable since Ted was out and this was basically an EVH/Landee production. And, obviously, Dave's charisma/personality was replaced by something...less.

I think that summarizes the Sam era in general. Yes the name was still Van Halen, but it was less.

The brothers basically wanted to kill each other for some reason and on several occassions Hagar passed out drunk in a chair in the studio. He said they had to rewrite the ltrics over and over and basically spoon feed it line by line to get the vocals done. Also before Mick came into that project there was about three months of work done on 5150 material with Dave. Dave hated the material apparently. Eddie is still Eddie and Mick is genius with melodies etc... so even in that state it a passable pop record, just not a Van Halen record. Nothing about the record was "Van Halen" any ounce of soul, texture, or a darker underpinning was gone as was humor.

Thanks Sesh, glad I wasn't breaking news. Yep that is the less colorful and detailed version of what I heard from Mick. . I'm glad the what great friends BS that was put out there about van hagar was called out.

I can only imagine how hard it was to manage those personalities w Dave the final few records of the original six pack
