You COULD add a string quartet to a VH gig - doesn't mean you SHOULD.

KISS and Metallica are proof positive of this.

My point exactly... so stop suggesting silliness... let Wolf have a much-deserved mini-vacation if Mike comes back for a one-off tour, don't try to shoehorn him in . Won't work.

Haven't heard the KISS symphony thing...

But Metallica's songs could only benefit from a string arrangement. 'Cause those tunes are mind-numbingly tedious in their original form, IMO. (Not to mention too fuckin' long... )
Why settle for something you have, if it's not as good as something you're out to get?

Not suggesting they "shoehorn" Wolf in. If you read my initial post you'd see I said: "If it HAD to be five..." Not saying I want that, but I know 100% I definitely don't want to see WVH strumming a rhythm guitar onstage. If it HAD to be five, what else is he going to do? Play tuba?

I did read your post, not capping on you. There shouldn't ever be any scenario where it HAS to be five was my point. It makes no sense, so it's kinda pointless to speculate on it.

I just got off the phone with Al. We talk every morning. His back has been bothering him, so he's going to sit the rest of the year out and Wolf will man the kit. Dave wants Mike back in but Ed's adamant that they get Billy Sheehan in the fold. I'll keep you posted.

I'm figuring on being a cheap seats guy from here on out what with that gargantuan jumbotron they're toting around. And the kids need new shoes. No pun intended.

I just don't care about Michael Anthony coming back, if that had a chance of happening. I miss the voice a little and the stage presence, but I still like Wolfgang. I don`t think it would help them sell out arenas. Who are the extra people that are coming? The know nothings that love Sammy and act like MA wrote the songs? I`m pretty sure the show I went to was sold out anyway. It wasnt like that everywhere else? I gotta admit it, I`d probably still drop a buck fifty a seat to see VH every time around even if Dave's voice isn't better (yeah, I know) or Wolf is more Bill Wyman than Verdine White.

See, the thing of it is that Mike Anthony rejoining the band (for an album, or an album and a tour or just a tour) is something that just simply SHOULD happen.
The main reason I think it might not is that with the majority of entertainers (be they actors, sports stars or musicans) who get that level of success Van Halen had so early on in their lives...people aren't equipped to deal with that kind of adulation. Too many of 'em start buying into their own bullshit myth hype after a time, and it becomes easy to forget (or at least take for granted) that it's the fans who put them where they are in the first place.
When you look at the petty bullshit that derailed the 1996 reunion, the fact that it took another ten years after that for Roth and the Van Halens to pull it together again and the fact that Ed's teenaged son was likely the key to waking Ed up, you realize with Van Halen...and I mean ALL of Van Halen, Roth included...you're not dealing with fully-formed adult personalities. The band was in their early 40s when the 1996 biz went down with a whole lotta girlish histrionics from ALL parties concerned...
Sometimes I think these guys just gotta man-up, or at least grow-up, do what's right for the fans and get Anthony back into the fold for a last hurrah. Enough fucking about over having to communicate to each other via the press/interviews, act like adults and just fucking do it, already.
