And they are hardly alone in that one...... I'm sure even Bleater has heard of a Rolling Stones album called "Tattoo You". Otherwise known as "a bunch of songs from the 70s that Mick dragged out of the vault and slapped a vocal overdub on".

Yeah, I'm familiar. Stones vs. VH? Different leagues. And ADKOT was not better than any of the first 6 VH albums, even Diver Down. So your point?

The point is there are a million and one reasons why any given song doesn't make an album. Often it's a case of the band having several songs of a similar tempo and not wanting to put them all on the same album. Sometimes, the song's not actually finished.... such as the previously mentioned "Tattoo You", where the music was done on all those songs, but Mick either had not finished the lyrics, or wasn't happy with what he had written. Bottom line is that if you have 30 songs ready, but you only have room for 10 or 12 on the record, there's going to be leftovers. Doesn't mean they are bad songs though. Remember that Van Halen's first three albums were already written and performed live (with one or two exceptions per record) for years before WB even signed them.

"Take Your Whiskey Home" and "In A Simple Rhyme" were written in fucking 1973 and not recorded (for an album) until 1980. Does that make them bad songs?

Fuck no, it doesn't. Nor does it matter that "She's The Woman" was written in 1975 and not recorded until 2012.

And yeah....... ADKOT was better than either Diver Down or 1984. The first 4 albums were slightly better though.

Absolutely. There are very few acts out there that have stock piles of gems that wouldn't see light of day without the bootlegging.

Different genre all together, but the posthumously released Elliott Smith CD, New Moon, has almost 30 songs from the era of his best CD, Either Or.

Back to VH, as great as their choices were for their first album, I would probably have picked a different set of 11 tunes if I were asked to pick from the WB 25 song demo. All of those other songs were worthy of making the cut, some possibly more so than ones that actually made it. I could have lived without Little Dreamer. I never thought Atomic Punk was really them, theme wise. Get The Show On The Road deserved to be on VH I for sure.

Getting back to the original question of this thread... yes I think Dave should still perform. I think alot of people judge Daves voice by listening to you tube videos instead of going to the shows. Ive seen VH in 2007 and 2012 and was blown away both times. Yes both times I saw them it was the 6th show of both tours so they were "fresh". Yes I saw them in a smaller venue {10,000} seat with a great reputation for acoustics. ( Moheagan Sun Arena ). Hell you couldnt even hear Dave half the time because of everyone singing along. My wife has a much broader range of music than I do and Ive gone to Motley Crue, Nickelback, Godsmack,Rob Zombie, Toadies, etc. and VH more than holds their own without all the pyrotechnics, cheesy videos and backup singers. I hope everyone bashing them has gone to a show, and experienced them live. They are pushing 60 and in better shape than me at 45. I enjoy the show and hope they tour again soon. Rock on Dave !

The original songs on Diver Down were very good. Problem is there wasn't enough of them. Overall the album lost "points" because it was half covers and too short.

And 1984..... well that's an obvious one. The synth pop shit.

I don't dislike those songs. I just feel that there were better ones than those on the side lines.
