IS SPAMMY's VOICE SHOT? More BS From the SISTERS!!!!
The drop D tuning device is called the "David Lee Tuna", or 'D-Tuna' for short...
:D
The DAVID LEE Tuna....that's about the GREATEST thing I've EVER heard!!!!!!!! I'll always refer to mine from now to ETERNITY as a DAVID LEE TUNA!!!! That gets my vote! The king has spoken!!!!
WOW! Don't know what HITCH is smokin', but I WISH he'd share!!!!
I believe that the SISTER's knew EXACTLY what they were doing all those years ago. They tried to undermine DAVE and his impact on THE MUSIC as much and often as they possibly could. It was a SMEAR CAMPAIGN that has NEVER ceased.
They tuned down on the SIX-PACK because:
1) Gave the music a HEAVIER Vibe
2) ALL OF EDDIE's HEROs(CLAPTON,HENDRIX,PAGE,BLACKMORE) did this
3)Made playin' easier do to the slackness in the strings(easier for ED...NOT most non-genius guitar players)
So when I see 'em doing it now, I can only ASSUME that what they've been sayin' 'bout DAVE must hold true for SPAMMY....his voice must be shot!!! Due to age, to too much Tequila, yellin' at Ed to quit pukin' during soundcheck and to QUIT threatenin' to fire Mikey!!!!!

Originally posted by Matt White It ain't much, but this kind of SHIT GRINDS ME!!!!
Just got the Oct 2004 issue of GUITARWORLD MAGAZINE and it has TAB to that pile 'o' shit song "It's about Time". Holy SHIT kids, its tuned down a half step to Eb!
Now, for most bands, this would be NO BIG DEAL. Actually, since the GRUNGE bands of the early 90's, this is common practice among modern rockers 'cause it gives the music added grit and heavyness.
But, back in the day, THIS USED TO BE ONE OF THE SISTERS PET BITCHES ABOUT DAVE!!!! They cried EVERYWHERE they could bout how they had to tune to OTHER than standard tunning to ACCOMODATE DAVE's lower range vocals. But with Spam, their were NO BOUNDARIES! So, one must assume, that SPAM's vocal range AIN't what it used to be. The old BASTARD can't hit the highnotes anymore.
OR, it might seem, that the bros were BULLSHITTING ONCE AGAIN just to try and disparage DAVE. Either way, FUCK THE VAN HALEN SISTERS
The fact that Eddie made comments about tuning down a half step for Dave is factual... although I don't recall it ever being an issue but more of a fact. Actually only on certain songs did they tune down to Eb but a good many were done in std tuning.
The bullshit here though is your references to grunge bands... Primary thing among those posers was use of the Drop-D tuning so they could play power chords on on the E and A strings with one finger. Thank those bastards for the loss of the guitar solo as well... lazy fuckers.
Shifting to a half step down (Eb) is a common practice generally based on the vocal range of the singer. Dave's much more of a lower register singer and that's his strength so Eb works better for his range. Added benefit is it does lend a heavier and chunky tone to the guitar.
Historically though this didn't come from the Grunge era... actually alternate tunings such as drop-d and going to Eb or even tuning down a full step to D or open tunings in A or G were prevelant in the early blues musicians especially Delta blues in the South going back to 1920's and onward... where Rock drew a lot of it's roots. Hendrix did majority of his stuff tuned down a half step... Billy Gibbons not only started at Eb but actually tunes down a full step to D and even 2 steps to C for a lot of ZZ tops classics going back to the 60's.
So if you are gonna talk shit about this stuff go get a history lesson and learn your music. Also never put a lot of faith in what one musician says about this or that... In 30 plus years of being musician myself I've never ever met another six-stringer that wasn't full of shit in one way or another... and Drummers... well let's just say they know more about the output from the south end of a north-bound bull than any other human on earth...

I didn't believe that a music history lesson was necessary to grasp the thought behind the orriginal post, Zahzoo. I have been playing for 20+ years, and am well AWARE of the use of SLACK tunning among the delta bluessmen and HAWIIAN style guitarist. Tony Iommi's accidental loss of his finger tips, Folk guitar tunnings, Jimmy Page and Adrian Legg, etc. So save the santimonious BULLSHIT for a novice. SPIN all you want to, it doesn't change the fact that the SISTERS are hypocritical miscreants who suffer from a HUGE inferiority complex.
And that thing about musicians.....your a PRIME EXAMPLE of EXPERIENCE=ARROGANCE. Save it for G.I.T.

???????? Is this diaper licker for real??? Who is it that you think you are educating and what does this pile of doggy chocolate have to do with the facts Matt presented? You are a f**king tool. Ed complained about Dave that he had to detune. Now he detunes for Spermy, who was sold to the public as a singer that does not require detuning. Ed found his standard tuning paradise with Spermy and we were all just so happy for him. Now, he does it voluntarily?
The Van Halens said at the time of the realease of 5150 that it was great that they no longer had to tune down because Hagar was a superior singer. As I remember Alex then said it was much cooler that EVH no longer had to put up with having slack strings becasue of Roths limitations.
Of course 5150 WAS tuned down so it wasn't just that they were talking shit they were also as usual treating their fans, half of whom played guitar as though they were fucking retarded.
The best thing about this was that EEAS wasn't tuned down...

Matt...Zahzoo's schtick is that he is old and was 21 or something when VHII came out and saw Dave with VH a bunch of times. He loves to haze anyone who makes reference to the fact that they werent around for the 'glory days' and insists that we all need a history lesson.
Dude, you just whacked Zahzoo, and I look forward to reading more of your posts...
(ps, I didnt edit your last post...I went to quote, but hit 'edit' instead...)
Maybe this is what a heroine addict feels like after getting a long awaited fix, shooting up in the corner of some abandoned building and just not giving a fuck about what the rest of the world thinks...TATTOO"

Thanks for the vote of confidence man. Lets see, I was 11 when VHII came out, so he is 46 then. That would have made him 17 when he started playin' guitar. Yup, he probably WAS there for the GLORY YEARS!!! Right on. I've got an older Brother who turned me on to VH from the get go. Been my FAVORITE BAND for as long is I can remember. Used to get yelled at in school(Grade & High!) for readin' rock mags checkin' up on the VH guys!
