U2, Grandmaster Flash, Sex Pistols Lead Rock Hall Of Fame Nominees
It looks like John Lydon — a.k.a. Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols — could be getting ready to die.

The snarling Pistols frontman has found his band among the 15 finalists for enshrinement in the 2005 class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an institution Lydon once declared to be a "place where old rockers go to die."

"The Rock and Roll Hall of Shame, that's what it ought to be," Lydon complained in 2003, after the Sex Pistols were denied entry for the second year in a row — although contemporaries the Ramones and the Clash received nods. "[That] title was clearly earned."

The Pistols are just one of three punk pioneers poised for enshrinement in 2005: Patti Smith and the Stooges also made the cut. The rest of the nominees include U2, Lynyrd Skynyrd, early hip-hop group Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, country legend Conway Twitty, alt-country pioneer Gram Parsons, singer-songwriter Randy Newman and R&B acts the O'Jays, Percy Sledge and Wanda Jackson.

Aside from the Sex Pistols, the most intriguing nomination is that of Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, who would become the first rap act inducted in the Hall. To be eligible for enshrinement, an artist's initial release must be 25 years old. Flash & the Five released two singles, "Superappin" and "Freedom," in late 1979 and early 1980, and the group's recognition could be the beginning of a wave of hip-hop inductions into the Hall.

Voters received ballots in the mail last week, and performers who receive the highest number of votes (and more than 50 percent of the vote) will be inducted; the Hall generally elects five to seven performers a year. The inductees will be announced sometime in November, and the enshrinement ceremony — the Hall's 20th — is scheduled to take place in New York in March.

I have to disagree, Bill. For each belongs, in their own way, IMO.

I remember us all discussing the VH/Hall issue months ago and the sheep were saying that Ed would see to it that Sam was a part of it... and I said that the Hall would likely see to it that he wasn't, and that it wasn't up to Ed.

i personally am very excited to see more rap acts up for a nomination.......run dmc obviously belongs in the hall, and i cnat wait for their induction

What I have heard is that Van Halen is planning their reunion around an induction in 2006. My question is that if Van Halen is nominated would that be for all eras? IMO only the Roth era has been around long enough to qualify. Do they look at it that way or do they look at all of it as one band? If so does that mean Gary is in?

usually a band gets in for one lineup.....and its usually the origional........my guess is they get in with dave, and only dave......the only badn off the top of my head that got inducted with both lead singers was the temptations.....and even though david ruffin is my idol, i still have respect for dennis edwards who also got in with them

some decline to go in, as gary probably would...sammy would go in as well if they are ever inducted which is not guaranteed at all.

I think it's been said before that original lineups are automatically in and the HOF decides who else gets in. Of course sam will get in even though his material will not be the reason they get in.

Aren't VH eligible this year? If so it's a joke their not in. I don't have a problem with any of the inductees but U2 is the only band bigger/as big as classic VH.

VH was eligible last year or the year before. Its not a lock at all that VH will get in, especially since it is so arbitrary how they do it. Critics have never really loved VH and they dont get their due as as influential band so by no means is this a done deal for them to get in or they already would be.
