Matthew 11:28-30
The crowds following Jesus were probably troubled and discouraged by the imprisonment of John the Baptist. These people were searching for relief from the heavy burdens put upon them by some of their religious leaders as well as the territorial (and tryannical) rule of Kind Herod.

They hped that John was the one who would help them, but now he was in prison. Could JEsus, whom John had pointed to as the One, truly be their salvation?

"The LORD is merciful and gracious...abounding in steadfast love. "

Jesus looked upon the crowd as sheep without a shepherd, and so his heart went out to them.

"Come to me," he called, "all you that are werary and carrying heavy burdens" (Matt. 11:28). Jesus knew that for these people, love was the key.

It was love that moved the Father to send him to earth and eexperience everything that had to do with the human condition. And it was love that sent him on his three-year mission of preaching and healing as he made his way to the act of love, his death on the cross.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us why the Son of God became man. "The word became flesh so that thus we might know God's love: 'in this is the love of God made manifest among us, that God sent his only son into the world, so that we might live through him. '" (CCC, 458).

Jesus was inviting his followers--as he invites us-- to take his "yoke,"
which is specially fit to our needs and abilities. "I won't make it hard for you, " he promises. "If you lean on me and let me shoulder the burden, we can be victorious together. Come to me, and truth will prevail, obstacles will fall and you will find all the strength and courage you need."

Jesus wants to pour out his Father's love upon us and make us secure and firmly rooted in that love. And Advent is just the season to receive this promise. Let's come to Jesus, as he invited, take up his yoke, follow him, and rejoice!!!

"Father I bless you for your faithfulness and love. My burden is lighter because you have sent your Son to be a light for my path and a shelter in times of trial and suffering."
