Most people seemed to think that we didn't ban enough soon enough.

Far more people left due to trolls than were ever banned.

There were actually almost no permanent bannings and you had to be acting like a total fucking dickhead repeatedly to get one.

I can think of at least a dozen off the top of my head - cool folks who posted daily, longtime members - who after a decade of troll flame wars said "fuck it" and decamped permanently.

You're really part of the problem. No wonder your own website failed.

It also lowered the amount of shit people were willing to put up with from abusive posters. That and anonymity became more difficult because of FB groups and the spilling over of friendships. People who worked in sensitive jobs couldn't be seen as being in the same space as some of our problem posters and also didn't want to risk some of the crazies attacking them via employers. I regret that we didn't ban the handful of people causing all the trouble earlier but in the long term there was an inevitability to it all. None of this is new and for the last of the trolls to try and pretend banning a few out of control idiots caused a decline is ludicrous and pathetic.

The thing is the nature of the forum means that most of it is still on here and especially nowadays anyone would be shocked at some of the shit that was posted.

And that's what was conveniently overlooked with the whole 'Sesh ruined this place due to overbanning' re: waxing nostalgic over the higher volume of daily traffic here ten years ago...

There were some real headcases here back in the day - back when it was the Wild West and anything went - that were bent on doing some pretty nasty stuff to others via online tomfoolery. THAT was the type of shit that contributed to more than a few members bailing as much as the proliferation of your run-of-the-mill trolls.

Not on this no because if I had deleted those threads based on a single abusive complaint from someone on drugs the next day you probably would have come back and demanded the removal of any posts containing the Hot For Teacher video.
