Nope. He had some shitty solo songs, but his stuff with KISS was A-list stuff.

Ace Frehley's 1978 solo album totally fucking rocked, period.

KISS for me reached the saturation point right around the time of the 4 solo albums and KISS MEETS THE PHANTOM OF THE PARK in 1978 (plus, I had ordered shit from the KISS ARMY via mail and those fuckers never sent me my stuff or my refund!). I mean, I was a kid a that time, and by the time Dynasty rolled around KISS was already passe. Dynasty has some good stuff on it, but have just never considered it essential listening, and I was into that band as big-time as anyone in the 1970s.

Based on some of the posts I've read here though, I may have to pick up a used CD of Dynasty and give it another listen. Am definitely gonna have to pick up Creatures again. Reading these recent KISS threads reminded me of how I didn't like everything on that album, but that the stuff I did like kicked ass.

Ace's solo album was the best KISS album IMO.

How about this for a theory.

How good would an album between "Alive II" and "Dynasty" have been if they had never made the solo albums and pooled all of those songs together for a group album?

It could have been the best Kiss album ever with about 40 songs to choose from.

As Gene tells it, the reason for the solo albums was that they were close to losing Ace and Peter at the time for various reasons. Gene and Paul decided that everyone would do solo effort and take a year away from the band (maybe that's what VH should've done in '85). So I don't know how good a KISS album at that time would have been. Probably would have just been Gene and Paul with a couple of Ace solos. Peter was gone after the Dynasty tour anyway, right?

            And Ace's album smokes!

Actually if you read the KISS Album Focus stuff on kissasylum.com, you'll see that the solo albums were basically done to fulfill contractual obligations.

I think it was some of collumn a and some from collumn b. They needed to fullfill a contract but they also wanted to give Peter and Ace a chance to do their own thing.

I was very close to buy a used Lp of Dynasty, until i realized there was no Lp inside the cover.

I have heard them both....several times over to give it a chance and see if it would eventually become likeable.......

C.O.S. had a few great tunes, but in general, it's not classic, and it sucked.

...course that's just my opinion.........and you're entitled to yours...

but the whole fact that KISS didn't want to release that, tells us something...

still, at the end of the day........all are opinions, and mine is the only one that matters..........

                          Ace's solo album does ROCK!

When the Ace man was on, he was ON!

The success of his album gave way for more Ace songs on Dynasty (and Unmasked).

i still have the lp vinyl...actually,i have all vinyl lp's up to unmasked....then i kinda skipped around.after that, creatures, animalize, asylum, and the alive 4 symphony.however,i do have the entire kiss catalogue by way of cassettes and cd's. what i usually do is when i complete a collection,i go out and buy a shitload of 120 minute blank cassette tapes, the dub everything down in chronological order.then i proceed to retire the original and listen to the 120 minute taped versions.
