By the way, I read that in the state of Washington the word "Oriental" used in reference to Asians is banned from all government documents. That is so cool, very progressive of the people there.

I guess it depends on where you are coming from. I believe there was quite a lot of racism and persecution of Chinese in the US when the railroads were being made and so on. I don't think that happened over here or at least it was rare so much less of an issue.

Actually you've just reminded me of something.

I was playing cards in a Vegas casino a few years back and the people around the table were the chinese guy who was playing China.

'Your turn to cut the cards China'. Is that offensive?

It didn't feel offensive. I wasn't offended by being called Scotland all night by the professional pool player from Phoenix because he didn't chose to remember my name. By 6am I was starting to struggle myself...

Is Oriental an offensive term then in the US?

It's funny there are definitely differences across the pond.

For example colored is a bad one in the UK I think because it was used in South Africa and seemed synonymous with apartheid but still seems to be ok in the US? Similarly I think oriental is ok at the moment in the UK eg you might find it on a government form. Not sure how it could be offensive. Oriental means Eastern I don't see people being upset about being called Western. Up until the last few years here chinese food was routinely called a 'Chinky' but you hardly ever hear that now. Some people must have made the decision. It was a phrase that I never heard in malice and wasn't derogatory so shouldn't be offensive but what would I know? If the chinese found it offensive then it was offensive. I'm just not sure it wasn't well meaning Caucasians that stepped in instead.

It is a bit offensive based largely on the work of scholar Edward Said. It should be noted that the term "oriental" was used as an amalgamation of all non-western cultures, not just "Asians"...

In general, nobody would call someone "Hey, Chinese" or "Hey, Black dude"...

It's because we don't say China anymore. It's "The Republic of China" and the people that live there (or come from there) are to be called The people of the Republic of China...
Why exactly? I don't know. But for ex.; During the olympic games, our medias never said "Chinese" once.

For the black people, it's more so that they would rather have us talking about their race than themselves, when refering to their skin color. "I'm not a black person, my race is black..."

And for sure, this will all change in a couple years... At the slight demand of a small group, the terms get to be played with by some useless government bureaucrats so it can all sound "professional" in our medias. What was accepted 10 years ago, is now offensive...

The same thing occurs to suit the feminists that want to change the whole dictionary to be feminine! It never ends...
