Roth was born into money. Roth was the best VH frontman. Sammy came from nothing growing up in an abusive home. The guy is a dork but became successful regardless with no help from his father. Sammy say whatever you want about the guy is a self made success story. The guy would have been successful even if he wasn't in music or had anything to do with Van Halen. Call him a dork or say you hate his music but the guy did go out and make something out of nothing taking advantage of every opportunity.

Ain't that the damnedest thing? If you count the Cabo Wabo name as part of VH, which there really is no other way to view it, you are probably right. Just the tequila factory side made the guy buckets of money. Not to mention the actual bar, name, branding, and all that jazz. I bet that shit still drives Ed & Alex crazy for getting out of the bar when & how they did.

The worst thing he probably ever said was the Eddie has issues and then compared 'issues' to, I don't know, doesn't Axl Rose have 'issues'? But he never kicked the guy when down....and in fact, never really threw any low blows when Eddie was doing great. Dave isn't a dirty fighter. Reason 5,782 Dave will be a rock legend for many decades & Sammy will be a footnote.

Page was NOT great up until 1977. Up to and including the 1973 tour, Jimmy Page's playing was relatively consistent. The guy started to lose a handle on his playing after the 1974 lay off, when the band pretty much did very little (if any) live work for an entire year. By the time of the 1975 American tour, his playing was largely hit or miss, and it wasn't just due to cocaine. (This is most notable on the Led Zeppelin dvd's section of Earl's Court performances from the same year.) The 1977 tour was a near disaster, as he started getting deeper and deeper into a heroin habit that ultimately made his playing embarrassingly awful during the 1980 tour in Europe. (Again, check out his playing on the dvd's section featuring the second Knebworth performance a year or so prior to the tour, which is clumsy and hamfisted in places.)

Yes, there are some bootlegs that reveal a mighty live outfit from 1969 or so through about 1973, but like most bands, Led Zep would be great for 3 nights and then astoundingly mediocre or crummy for the next 2-3. For every amazing bootleg I've heard from a given year, I've heard around 5 average (or below average) ones. Considering how long their sets were at the time, that is still a pretty fair average, bit let's not get carried away here with the so-called legend.

Baton Rouge 75 All great sounding and great playing by Page. I'll take a real fans word on it. Me. After 75 it was hit or miss. Mostly miss. L.A. and Clevland 77 and the first 79 Knebworth show was good. His tone was bad from 77 through 80 to go with the drug problems. The 80 tour they stripped the show down but Page was all over the place most nights. I have 2 Firm radio shows that kill the studio albums sound. They sound flat as hell. But back to Sam, Who cares !!!
