Anybody who thinks this won't result in racial profiling is either stupid or willfully ignorant.
Whose country is this?

Racial profiling will, by default, be a result of this legislation in Arizona.
It is indeed unfortunate. However, if the people profiled are carrying their documentation, in theory they have nothing to worry about...unless, of course, they are here illegally.
Apparently the majority of citizens in Arizona want this, so one presumes that majority is also prepared to produce identification as requested. In reality, don't most people leave their house with a driver's license on them anyway?Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment

That's true enough, Terry, but the problem I have with it is that police officers can and will use their power to push people around. Just the other day I had a cop pull me over and accuse me of texting while I was driving (I wasn't - never even had my cell phone in my hand). I had two of my kids in the car and even they knew I wasn't. I told the cop I wasn't and he got really huffy, insisted he "SAW" me do it and then berated me for being a bad father by lying in front of my children. Kept me waiting there for almost twenty minutes while he ran my plate, my license and insurance and whatnot.
Twenty minutes.
Finally comes back and lets me off with a warning...
These are the types of cops who are going to LOVE this shit because it's going to give them another foot in the door to push people around, and a lot of cops just get off on doing that. "Reasonable Cause" can be anything these days...Looked like you were swerving a bit...WHERE'S YOUR PAPERS?...Were you on your cell phone just now while you were driving? Hmm...looked like it to me...WHERE'S YOUR PAPERS?...Thought I saw an open container in this car....WHERE'S YOUR PAPERS?...Hunh...guess it was a cigarette you were smoking, kinda looked like a joint though...WHERE'S YOUR PAPERS?...
To be blunt, the benefit of catching a few extra illegals doesn't outweigh the intrusion on social freedoms all people should be allowed to continue enjoying.
Of course, I won't have to worry about being stopped and asked for proof of my right to be in America while I'm in Arizona, right? Wonder if it's got anything to do with me being white?Twistin' by the pool.Comment

Of course you wouldn't have to worry about being stopped in Arizona, and, yes, it undoubtedly would be because you are white.
There IS a double-standard in America when it comes to race. However, virtually everyone (including blacks and latinos) uses racial profiling in one form or another. There are a lot of race cards in the deck, and not all of them are dealt from the top.
Regarding individual rights and democracy, as citizens we're free to do what the ruling classes and law enforcement tell us to do or suffer the consequences. That's the result of less than half who are eligible to vote doing so, and a general lack of sustained interest on the part of those who do vote.
One way or another, as citizens we get what we deserve.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment

Nothing said "lawful stop." The term was "lawful contact," whatever the fuck that is supposed to mean. Read your own posts, dickhead...Last edited by Nickdfresh; 05-02-2010, 10:11 PM.Comment

It depends on the circumstances, doesn't it? Putting a laser on a car and recording 80 is reasonable suspicion of a traffic violation. Walking around with a gun and cash after you heard there's a bank robbery is reasonable suspicion of a robbery. It's specific and articulable circumstances that give rise to suspicion.
To just randomly stop somebody and ask for their ID is not legal under federal law. That is not a "lawful contact."
Like I asked your queer friend: a person gets stopped for speeding. They have no ID and no registration. Should the cop not inquire who this person is and whether they're a citizen? I'm pretty sure they already check to see if you have warrants.
If you can't accept that the police can ever stop and ID somebody under reasonable suspicion - because cops are racist - then I guess nobody can ever be stopped by a cop for any reason. And you're saying emigration laws could never be enforced. Because asking for somebody's visa is inherently racist, and should never be done.
But we're just rehashing what was already said earlier in the thread because you're too lazy / incompetent to read it.Comment

There's nothing about when and why cops can ask for someone's ID, making the targets the you know who...Comment

No shit, sherlock.
That's why everybody's outrage over this "racist Nazi madness!!!" is just ignorant.
As I said earlier in the thread, there's another part of this law that is objectionable, but I don't think anybody's read it yet. Checking somebody's credentials after a "lawful contact?" No, not really worried about that. Even a fucking moron can realize that "they can do that already!"Comment
