That's why I think a good portion of a person's healthcare should be paid out of pocket...

Wow, I have a physical every year... Well, I used to. Unfortunately, my Dr. moved two years ago, and I haven't found another that I like.

I do get my pacemaker checked every 6 mos. though.

I've been in emerg and have seen people there for non-emergency care on a regular basis...usually bitching that I get in before them, because I only go to emerg if it's a true emergency.

To me it's really strange not getting regular check-ups...

Obviously there are those who would abuse the system, but my point was that here in the US, many of the people in the emergency room are there because their lack of healthcare coverage prevented them from seeing a doctor previously, and they may HAVE an actual emergency situation now, but one which would have been totally preventable if a sane health care system existed. Using an example from my own past, I had to use the emergency room once.... I had severely impacted/abcessed wisdom teeth, and no dental coverage. For a long time, I could manage the occasional pain with common over the counter medications like Ibuprofen. It would be a miserable few days, and then it would go away for a while. But it finally got to the point where it wouldn't go away, and it was obvious that there was an infection present. And when an infection is that close to the brain, well, people have literally died from that shit. (there was a similar case that made headlines here during the healthcare debate two years ago)

So I took the only option I had, at the time. Went to the ER and got them yanked. Actually the yanking was a day or two later, but at least they gave me some antibiotics and pain pills in the meantime so it wouldn't kill me.

Nobody should ever have to tolerate pain and infection like that. It's a fucking crime.

I guess you must have missed the lesson in nursing school when they mentioned how poor dental health can seriously impact the rest of the body. As I mentioned, having an infection close to the brain can be dangerous. And there's a definite correlation between plaque in the mouth and plaque in the heart.

So yes, dentistry should be covered under a real health care system. So should mental health, though that's entirely another discussion. And it ain't about "liberal feelings", it's about common fucking sense.
