Carter inherited the shit post-Vietnam economy and the hangover of massive gov't spending on both defense (or war in this case) and expansion of entitlement spending under LBJ's "Great Society". You could argue that there was actually some sense in the gov't spending money here at home, though...

I doubt Eddie Munster even remembers the Carter administration, considering he was in Kindergarten when Jimmy was elected. He just buys the bullshit "Carter bad/Reagan Messiah" narrative that his bosses, the KKKochs wrote for him.Eat Us And Smile

Ford, he's our age (damn we're getting old!). I remember Carter and especially Reagan pretty clearly--though granted I may not have had the ability to process it all or understand the nuisances at them time...Comment

Even at the age of 14, I knew that was bullshit. Of course I had no idea then just how much the BCE had actually done. Let alone all they would do after that.Eat Us And Smile

Sure it is. The economy Reagan inherited from Jimmy Carter was much, much worse than the one Obama inherited from Bush. Double digit tax rates, runaway inflation, and growing trade deficits were just part of the problem. Slick Willy probably doesn't remember since he was probably trying to get in his secretary's pants at the time.
Within 4 years, the economy was booming. RR put more money back into the hands of ordinary citizens by cutting taxes and putting the tax code into sensible reform with a top tax rate of only 28% (with fewer loopholes, mind you.)
everytime I read your nonsense I realize that I forgot more about your country than you will ever know. have you ever seen a school from the inside? (mopping the floor does not count!!!)Roth Army Icon

Well, the single event that triggered my interest in politics was the day the senile old bastard was sworn in, and the hostages in Iran just "coincidentally" happened to be released at the same time.

I was about the same age and remember that was fishy even to kid, yes. And Reagan completely fucking everything up pretty much sparked my interest in politics too. Think I've posted this before, but this is still on the wall in what was my room at my parent's house...

I've admitted here before that I like Reagan in the nostalgic sense. Even though he's cast as the ultimate conservative one for some reason, many of his policies (like Nixon) were moderate, even liberal to an extent, and he actually increased social entitlement spending, IIRC. Republicans who cast him as a hard right conservative are either dumb or disingenuous, or both as seems to be the case for those in charge of the GOP-Witch-hunt'athon.
He was not a great president, he simply rode a wave of an economic recovery he had little directly to do with and was just elected at the right time to hit the crest of expansion in the economic cycle and recovery from the national post-Vietnam hangover. Much of his deficit spending was actually unnecessary, the tax cuts were excessive, and he fucked us in the long run...Last edited by Nickdfresh; 09-08-2012, 03:18 PM.Comment

Didn't like him then, not a huge fan now, but he's a lightweight - and a (gasp!) moderate Republican - by today's standards.Originally posted by conmee

The recession you speak of was a late 70's/early 80's situation that our greatest President pulled us out of by 1984.“If bullshit was currency, Joe Biden would be a billionaire.” - George W. BushComment
