A lot of people don't know how much some of those old guns are worth. Someone might be bringing in an old Colt, Winchester, or a German Luger someone brought home from the war. Some of those guns can be worth tens of thousands of dollars. Old Colt Peacemakers go for crazy money now.

It works both ways too. Gun stores and pawn shops unload all the old worthless junk guns at these things and get money. Even on guns missing parts that can't shoot.

I posted an article recently somewhere else on how a daughter of a WWII Vet was going to turn in a WWII German StG-44 (first) "Assault Rifle". It wasn't functioning, but easily could be made too and was worth around $40,000USD. The police told her they'd hold it for her until she found a collector to buy it. These gun-buybacks ought to have monied collectors/historians there to take the historically significant guns at market value...

My dad had a Luger, a .357 and a .44 in the collection. He'd had the Luger since WWII, and was a Bond and Dirty Harry fan. Kinda wish I still had the Luger and the PPK at least...

It's a historical firearm but it's also illegal under the 1933 gun control law that made full automatic firearms illegal. I mean if the government wanted to they could throw the book at her for even having it because all citizens are expected to know the law. So the police were decent to her and let's hope the feds stay out of the matter. The federal gun laws are very strict. The gun doesn't even have to function to get into trouble. Even if you have a hole in the receiver to accept an auto sear the ATF can come after you for having a machine gun. If you have any M-16 parts in your AR-15 you can get in trouble. They can throw the book at you.

I hope the lady gets the market value on the rifle. The IRS will expect her to list the sale as income and lets hope the rifle goes to a good home. It would be cool if it was displayed in a museum so other people could see it.

.. now if a leo intercepts it and keeps it as his own, prosecute him/her as a criminal

locally a leo was found selling 5 glock 9's with suppressors & defaced serial #'s in addition to many guns that were seized - he was in charge of the destruction of the weapons and decided to keep a few of the nicer ones

he got a suspended sentence - no time served & if he keeps his nose clean in 2 yrs it will be removed from his record

NYS is a GREAT place to live if you have a badge - if not , different gun laws and apply to you

Under federal law the receiver is the firearm and if you even have the holes in it for the auto sear or any full auto trigger parts in it, you are in big fucking trouble. Like $30,000 fine and jail time trouble.
