That Marshall in the pic with the two Variacs looks to be a metal-faced Super Lead...it looks brand new. Definitely not his prized 12000 series "plexi" Super Lead.

True, but perhaps that photo is from the period where the 'grail' was LOST in shipping after their 1st Japanese tour? Supposedly he was using newer Marshalls, Laneys and WHATEVER until the original one resurfaced....

Yeah, I remember him saying his original got lost in shipping, but thankfully he got it back.
You know, I still don't understand what happened in Ed's head that made him want to get away from that tone. I mean, how can he think his tone with the 5150 amps was better than the original brown sound? Perhaps it was a durability issue, in that he felt that lugging around vintage amps was too big of a risk, and I can see that point. However, now there are plenty of replica manufacturers of those old Marshalls out there now, and there is really no excuse for shit ass tone. The replicas certainly sound better than the official Marshall reissues.

Well this is the 78 japan tour, so all this stuff including the "prized superlead" got lost.
But, I think he got it back.
This is '86
I know...I know...That's not the plexi...This is
That depends on if you take what eddie says as the truth.
If you look real close, right under Dave's balls, there are two plexi heads.
One is raw wood, and the other is black.
One of these is the " prized superlead"
Nice! BTW, I've tried a Plexi reissue...not impressed. Wanted to be, but wasn't. I want to get something along those lines for a little more tonal variety...I'm going to check out some of the replicas...
Metroamp If you want an EXACT replica of any period Plexi, then this is the place to go. George Metropoulos, owner of the company, is the shiznit. You can have him build it or build it yourself. The dude is super nice and goes out of his way for his customers.

Could EVH have replicated the Brownsound on any old equipment laying around? With say, a completely stock Strat? Back in the glory days. SRV's strings were all jacked up.....EVH played' a piece of shit by all accounts.
I play very little, and very poorly. I've gotten different opinions from different folks. One person commented that EVH's stuff was all a bunch of trickery, and that RR blows him away. The best guitarist I know personally (MASTODON) commented that whatever effects EVH used back in the day didn't matter....it was all about Eddie's METHOD.
All I can think of is the line in Appacolypse Now where the Sheen dipshit goes, "I don't see any method."
