Not exotic, no...but in Hendrix' day Strats were still mostly made of Ash (they were just starting to get into Alder and whatnot), and Ash's what EVH chose for the Frankie body specifically because he didn't like the way 70s Strat bodies sounded (Alder).

And from what I hear, EVH IS using Big-Blocks (not necessarily the Titanium ones), and we know for a fact the $30K replica has the Brass one installed...

When you can play at this level of skill, it doesn't help -or- hurt to have an alder body strat instead of ash, when the result is dethroning Eddie Van Halen as reigning guitar god of rock.

I would say it even helps because alder is lighter than ash, so you wind up playing the guitar more with less fatigue..

I used to get out of Pasadena Boys Club in the afternoon, and we would ride bikes down Colorado Blvd. on the weekend. I remember Dr. Music's original location, I recall the drum side of it and on the other side on the floor, the cardboard box Grover would load up with his trunk-junk close to the door on the left.

Let me tell you something about the seconds pile: the alders were the first to go. The ash's were left for a reason - they're difficult to refinish with that thick coursey grain.. too Country Western for the late 70s, they were the last to go OK.

Back on topic, I stand corrected, was informed today the Performance Strat in the Demartin clip has the Titanium saddles and one of the oversize-"L" 42mm Brass Blocks. Interesting combo!
