    Slash or Eddie VAn Halen???

I know this is a VAn Halen board. But I am listening to "USE YOUR ILLUSION 2" right now and I am just blown away by the diversity of the riffs that Slash and Axl came up with.

GNR have a short catalog But its in my opinion a little more solid than Van Halen.

    Thoughts???

Well their Styles are much differant. Eddie has more Flash and Speed and Flair.

But Slash has a differant Soul to his playing almost like he is talking.

I'm not saying your right or wrong. just interested in the perspectives of playing.

For my money I think Eddie is more of a Technical Showman. But Slash is the dude that communicated with you the way he knows how.

true..totally different styles.... I like GNR...and Slash does have that way of talking, so to speak. I know what you mean, especially in the slower tunes....

But Eddie is the best I ever fuckin heard man...hands down!

I can't argue that point. Exspecially on a fan board.

I guess I worded my question wrong. I guess I was asking more about the types of styles. The Technical or the melodic.

I'm listening to "You could be mine" And Slash has some really short solo licks but it's like there is this differant level. I'm not as familiar with Eddies' best works.

When we meet up you should direct me twards some shit of eddies I should check out.

I don't want people to think I think Slash is the best ever. Because I am a huge fucking fan of "Willie Nelsons" and the solo's that dude can rip out. I'm in it more for the emotion.

Also GRATE EMOTIONAL SOLO SONG "A TEAR FOR EDDIE" By Ween. Listen to that shit and tell me about tearing up for real.

Slash is a great player, but for technique the nod goes to Eddie V. There's no comparison really.

I'll disagree. Not because your a Virgin loser either. It's because I'm looking from the stand point of bands catalogs from that era of music. I personally feel that his work with GNR is a little bit more relevent than Eddie's.

Honestly that probably isn't the fault of Eddie. Only because Hagar fucked up so many potentially Great Riffs with Weak Lyrics and content. Axl was a solid Front man that can cross decades.

DLR totally holds up also in my opinion. His sense of Melody was incredible exspecially for party music.

They're so much different in style and influences. Slash is influced by Joe Perry and Keith Richards more than anything. He's all about soul and passion, blues and balls. His guitar is an extension of who he is. Ed is more into tricks and flash, he blows people away by being such a virtuoso performer.

Ed is also a much busier player than Slash. Listen to their solos. Ed uses a lot more notes than Slash to make his point.

In a nutshell, Ed rips, Slash grooves.

Fuck yeah. Nobody plays like Willie. For my money, Willies the best and most original guitar player alive. I remeber seeing the Storytellers he did with Cash and just being blown away. I'd never paid attention to him before. Hearing him play on that record was the musical equivalent of eating vanilla ice cream all your life and suddenly trying rocky road! It changed my whole palate in terms of guitar playing.

You are lost and in need of owning more than Willie Nelson's greatest hits and a few GNR cd's. Ed Van Halen, drunk out of his skull, playing an out of tune Squire, unplugged, would impress a FUCK of alot more ppl than what Slash can do. We've already seen what Slash can do. He's not improving. He's plateaued. Not saying he's shit, cause he's not. The guys got kick ass rhythm- but next to Ed, he's the drizzlin' shitz. And Im not just saying that because you still live at home and fuck a plastic doll to ease the pain of not breast feeding off your mom anymore. Im saying it because it's true.

Point well made. But how do you judge improvement in a player of his type? By the same argument neither Joe Perry nor Keith Richards have 'improved" during their careers. They still write killer songs and killer riffs, but have they added anything new to their arsenal of tricks? No.
