Point well made. But how do you judge improvement in a player of his type? By the same argument neither Joe Perry nor Keith Richards have 'improved" during their careers. They still write killer songs and killer riffs, but have they added anything new to their arsenal of tricks? No.

also a good point. But we are comparing Ed to Slash. Slash has been playing the way he has for at least 10 years. Ed has not. A lot of people can talk trash about Ed, but if you go throught the cycle of his career, you'll see that from 1977 to now, he has improved. (Well, up until F.U.C.K anyways) Slash has stayed the same. Which is cool, but if we are comparing the two...? Id say Ed has jumped leaps and bounds in the same time frame. Has Slash changed in the last ten years? No. I would also say richards and Perry have not "improved" either. A really good guitar player looks for new techniques instead of relying on what worked in the past. Thats just my opinion.

He wrote many of the riffs that later appeared on albums in 1977, and just took his time using them.

well aside from knowing what we know...(Blueprints and boots etc...) I still think Ed has strived on being more creative with sound than Slash, Richards, Perry and certainly Willie Nelson. :D

I still think he improved through 1984....even some of his hagarism's are good. Although, as you point out, a crummy human being without the guitar. Cathedral still blows me away and he didnt come up with that till 81,82.
