Anyone who has worked in Public Relations or Marketing knows the general public is easily confused and a public image is best kept simple and unchanged.
Years ago everyone knew what Van Halen meant, what it was and most in our generation admitted it was the shit. Van Halen was a huge brandname that meant jaw dropping music, charisma, and one hell of a live show. It was more than any one member of that band; even though, the guitar player and lead singer were in the lime light for their increadable talent.
Like all good established brandnames, once you've become a ledgend, you have to work to fuck it up. People will forgive stupid mistakes and bad decicsons while they wait for you to get your act back together and bring back the brilliance once again.
Yeah, the fans waited years for Van Halen to get their shit back together. Oh they must have writers block, oh David must have fucked Alex's wife, oh it must be the alcohol and drugs ect... and on and on. Yeah we waited. For two fucking decades!
The last decade of screw ups just nailed the coffin nail into Van Halen. The greatness was a long time ago and unless you are a true fan of the classic catalog when Roth was quarterback, and in your late 30's to 50's, all you see is a stupid, sack of shit band.
Anyways, I was wearing a classic Van Halen logoed jacket today and a young kid told me Van Halen sucks and I suck if I like them. I responded, Van Hagar sucks but classic Van Halen is what I'm into. The kid looked puzzled. He didn't know the difference. The Roth years were way before his time. What I came to realize is Van Halen no longer means what it used to. The brandname has been ruined. For this reason, I wish they would have renamed the band when Sammy joined.
