The sheep on this site seem to continue to use the argument that Van Halen took on a more 'mature' and 'intelligent' songwriting direction when Hagar joined and that Roth only knew how to write about fucking and partying. Now...have you sheep listened to the Roth era Van Halen back catalogue at all. For a start, Van Halen were a party band period, but Roth was/is one hell of an intelligent guy (a lot more than Sammy could ever hope to be) and he showed just how mature and intelligent he could be in certain songs, without going all out on the cheese.
You want mature? How about 'Little Dreamer' on the first album. The subject matter to 'Light Up the Sky' is pretty dark. He could also write songs about love, 'In a Simple Rhyme' for fuck sake, does that make you wanna retch because of cheese overload? Hell no! It's a great fucking song with good lyrics. Same goes for 'Little Guitars' , I read that Roth got the inspiration for those lyrics from a poem. I could go on...
Tell me that I'm wrong sheep, go on! Roth wrote 'mature' songs a hell of a lot better than Spam did. I don't care how loyal you are to Gaybar, I do not at all believe that you could seriously think he is a good lyricist. Oh you say the 'Balance' album is mature? Gimmie a break, all Hagar does is say "Oh Lord" every five seconds on that album and you call it mature?
Anything Hagar ever did in Van Halen, Roth did better. I hope my point is clear.
Whats everyone else think?
