Hagar's cliche-ridden lyrics never were a sign of maturity to me, and Van Halen wasn't ever supposed to represent highbrow intellectualism, least not the classic lineup I grew up digging.

Think 'mature' was just EVH and Hagars euphemism for 'top 40 pop', and when Roth left the rest of Van Halen 'grew up' and took a corporatized attitude towards their output: Sam Halen albums being comprised of silly love songs combined with several faux-rockers thrown in to satisfy a dwindling fanbase that remembered when Van halen was a rock band.

Funnist part is the earnestness with which Sam sung such trite crap like Right Now; did the man think he was imparting original, meaningful thoughts?

The truth is that VAN HAGAR looked around the fading Rock scene during their F.U.C.K. tour as the band began to implode in 91 & 92'! What did they see? They saw one of the greatest rock show extravaganzas of all times in U2's ZooTV/Zooeuropa Tours. A band that was, in the case of the AUCHTUNG BABY era. U2 was ambivalently political but yet they were able to pull off a massively entertaining show filled with irony and sarcasm that was part Dadaism.

The Sammy Hagar 'mature' lyrical content facade, his attempt to tap into the relevance and even apolitical philosophical conceptualizations that U2 was bringing to the table from the Joshua Tree/Rattle & Hum period, one that was later deconstructed in their above mentioned tour. The truth is that Sammy aspired to be the right-wing Bono of rock, but he failed miserably because he lacks Bono's wit, intelligence, natural charisma, religious background, and self-education.

Want proof of this? Think I am just shiting onto my keyboard? Well...during U2's live set for 'Even Better than the Real Thing,' Bono used to take a handy-cam and do a 'Bono-cam' where he interacted with the Edge during his solo, and with the audience and the results would be projected onto a screen behind him.

Watch one of the Hagar live videos, I forget which forgettable song it is, from the latter part of the F.U.C.K.(this) tour and you see Sammy Hagar doing what during an Eddie Van Halen solo? Yup! You guessed it! taking a handy-cam and doing close-ups of Ed! VAN HAGAR wanted desperately to become U2, with lyrical content fraught with pseudo-aphorisms! And they failed miserably because they could never, ever pull that off! Not with big fat, dumb Sam, drunken Ed, hot suace Mike, or Alexis! And not with Gary either...

Dave's lyrics on FAIRWARNING however are in fact VERY (proto)-political in their own way. Unconsciously perhaps, but his anger as well as that of the band as a whole, resonates on those words and notes. He is not articulating any particular political or intellectual stance mind you, but he is saying more than fat Sam ever could with less words and more truth!

Sammy isn't fucking right wing. He's a San Fransisco hippy for Christ sakes. Sammy sings songs that says "you don't need organized religion" and I don't think Sammy really digs guns either. Just because the dude is friends with Ted Nugent who is unquestionably right wing doesn't make Sammy right wing.

Sammy in many ways is stuck back in the 60's. Well let's say the lame part of the 60's. Sammy is still wearing tie dye and holding the peace symbol. He's eating Granola and embracing Eastern phylosophies and naming his kids names like Karma.

Sammy stands for everything guys like Gene Simmons and Alice Cooper wanted to destroy with a vengeance. Sammy is about as unrocking as you can get. Shit, he's fucking The Mammas and the Poppas or Peter, Paul, and Mary. Heck, he's not even that good. Sammy is writing Puff the Magic Dragon but the dragon is a huge Cabo Wabo tequila fan. Take some lame 60's vibe and turn it into a tequila commercial and you got Sammy Hagar.
