I got mine at BORDERS BOOKS...they had plenty....

      I agree with Elvis..."I'LL WAIT" is BRILLIANT....But...

I really thought that "I'LL WAIT" benefited from NOT having those faggy keyboards that the original had...FUCK

20+ years down the line...DAVE's CLASSIC line to EVH that..."NOBODY wants to see your DEAD ASS playing keyboards" is DEAD-NUTS accurate.

The bluegrass version of the song really makes the lyrics shine that much moreso.....a truly underrated DAVE CLASSIC......

The ERUPTION on banjo has to be heard to be believed.......

Remembering my listening session yesterday I can remember mostly good with a lil bad! One song ... I'll remember when I hear it again on my way to the studio ... I should be writing notes as I listen, sounded a lil Charlie Danielsish another at the end made me think ... this songs rythm sounds more like "Betty Sue(or whoever) is getting out tonight" by Seger! I haven't check the times but these songs, at least some, seem to be longer than the originals! I guess it's due to the ample string jams!

First of all, the last time I purchased an album on it's release date was Your Filthy Little Mouth way back in 1994, so as you can see, new music rarely gets me excited...

This latest Van Halen tribute, Strummin With The Devil grabbed my attention immediately when Dave gave us a preview on the GRATE Roth Radio...

So, I took off at six O'clock this morning on a quest to find this album, and I did, at walmart for $13.88...

I'm not really a country or bluegrass fan at all, but I can recognize and appreciate a good country song, especially when it has good musicianship, and that's where this album shines...

The songs are classic and the playing is really on fire at times...

Actually, my first taste of bluegrass was in the early 80's, when my mom bought a Ricky Skaggs album that was full of hot guitar licks...

              Ok, some of my thoughts...

              The first song, Jump, sucks...

I think Dave does a poor job, although not nearly as bad as Ice Cream Man 2...

I never liked Jump AT ALL, and I'm not looking foward to hearing Dave butcher the vocals on Leno later tonight...

Jamie's Cryin' is next and is 100 times better than Jump, and although Dave's fake southern accent makes me cringe, the song is very nice and he really does a nice job...

One thing this song does is confirm Dave's ability to supply vocals on a future Van Halen reunion album, but the clock is ticking... faster and faster!

My favorite song on the album is the third song, I'll Wait...

I always liked the song and this version is beautiful and it clearly demonstrates the clever song writing ability of Mr. Edward Van Halen...

Another personal favorite that I think lends itself suprisingly well to bluegrass is And The cradle Will Rock...

Awesome playing, although I think it's too short at 3:41, compared to the six minutes and seventeen seconds of I'll Wait...

Eruption on banjo is a cool touch, as is an all instrumental Hot for Teacher...impressive!

Overall, I think Strummin With the Devil is GRATE, and a must have for any Van Halen die-hard...

Maybe the success of this project will have what it takes to get Edward's attention...

A real Van Halen album following this would be SWEET!

Nice write up Elvis.. I agree with your view 100% of the album. I have listened to it about 3 times and really like it. Dave did "Jump" last night and I really wish he would have done "Jamie's Cryin". It would have been so much better....

                What I think!

Jump - David Lee Roth with the John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band. This song doesn’t translate well for me. Dave is trying to sing it too much like the original. I don’t think it should have been on the album, but I know why Dave did it. He thinks this is the one song Van Halen will always be remembered for. Maybe so. Too bad if it is. There are so many better.

Jamie’s Cryin’ - David Lee Roth with the John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band. (Full Version). One of my favorite VH songs. I like this a lot. Sweet melodies. Dave sounds superb. Band is smokin.’ Translates well to this style of music.

I’ll Wait - Blue Highway Cool. Maintains the same vibe as the original. Perhaps better. This guy’s voice works well for the song. Good choice.

Runnin’ with the Devil - the John Cowan Band. Just awesome! Dave would have SMOKED on this!!

Dance the Night Away - Mountain Heart. Very nice. Dave would have been great on this as well. Nice interpretation and pretty harmonies.

Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love - Iron Horse. NO!!!!! Iron Horse, you castrating bastards! Just horrible! Should not be on the album!!

Hot for Teacher - David Grisman and Sons. Not one of my favorite VH songs to begin with. I’m glad there are no vocals. Pretty cool version. The fiddle works well with the speed of the song.

Feel Your Love Tonight - Tony Trischka, Dudley Connell, Marshall Wilborn, Dave
McLaughlin. Another one of my favorite VH songs. I was worried they’d ruin it for me, but it’s a nice interpretation and far enough away from the original that it stands on it’s own.

Panama - Cornbread Red. Not bad. Doesn’t move me too much one way or the other. Good enough.

Unchained - Iron Horse. Bad! Where’s the balls? Oh, wait, it’s the castrating bastards again. Oh well, the world needs more pussy.

Ice Cream Man - Larry Cordle. Horrible! You know how much pussy Dave has gotten off this song? This guy gets no pussy, I’m sure of it. He doesn’t get the song is not about ice cream! No one should sing this song but Dave. Horrible. This will get the skip, for sure.

And the Cradle Will Rock… - the John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band. This is all right. Different vibe to it. I don’t hate it.

Could This Be Magic? - the Nashville Bluegrass Band. Good choice for the album. Works well in this genre.

Eruption - Dennis Caplinger. Woah, nelly! Jump back. It’s good, but I think the EVH solo is a sacred thing. Leave it alone. BeYoung! should not be doing it live either IMO.

Jamie’s Cryin’ - David Lee Roth with the John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band. (Radio Edit) See above.

I think song choice was key and there were some bad choices and some good choices. I can definitely listen and enjoy a lot of this.

Bought my copy yesterday. I love the two DLR songs and really like the rest of it, especially I'll Wait and Eruption.
