I liked Vai with Alcatrazz (Disturbing the peace...great record) & on 'Flexable.' I even enjoyed the P.I.L. project with Lydon.
When he started showing up in DLR videos & Whitesnake (no one replaces John Sykes, btw) videos, making those animated facial expressions...i got thoroughly tired of him. Fast.
I ended up seeing the 'Skyscraper' tour in '88, but the VH covers lacked the brown, it was all gymnastics.
It's lovely one can play the solo to "on fire" with one hand, but did it kick me in the balls like Ed in '81?
You gotta feel pain with the pleasure.
With Ed there are moments that can never even be comprehended, they are so genius....the intro to meanstreet, the delay & volume swells in Cathedral, flamenco bits in Little guitars, beer cans & chains with Intruder...the 'off the cuff' burst of Eruption-like virtuosity right before the 'Fools' riff kicks in...
    So many moments, man.

It totally lacked the seriousness and the passion that Edward displayed night after night back in the day...

Yngwie and SRV are the only other big name players (IMO) that displayed a similar type of intimacy during their live performances...

Vai did nothing for me when I saw him live...

        Now that's a great record.

Rotten, Vai, and Ginger Baker. Not really a "Public Image Limited" kinda lineup, but it sounded great anyway.....

WOW.... If there is one guitar player that has carried on Jimi's vision, it is Steve Vai. He has soooo many ways of playing. Not a 1 trick pony.

Is Steve Vai playing in these videos? As a huge Vai fan, I have never heard this before.

Ah, ah, ah! Unlike, "Kintergarten", there's only one acceptable spelling for "Cuntie".

(I know, being as you're completely unfamiliar with them, you didn't know how to spell it. Well, now you do. Use this knowledge to go forward and find your place in the world. And you're welcome!)

If ya like Vai, check out that Public Image Limited record called "CD" or "CAssette" or "Album", depending on the format.
I'm not a Steve Vai follower, but that's a great display of Vai working in a non-fammiliar enviornment & impressing.
I also like Stevie's spanking from Zappa's "Them or Us" record.
On that one, Vai & a very young Dweezil Zappa trade solos.

                      So true, man.
Watching the Oakland footage from '81, there's a sense of danger, a sense that these guys fucking mean it.
Eddie is just ferocious, and Dave owns that stage!
You see the crowd, and you can tell it's a show they will never forget.
BY '88, both VH & Roth were more family friendly & cute.
Sammy was about as compelling as Jimmy Buffet playing for your parents, and Vai just looked & acted too dorky in comparison to Ed.
He was doing splits & licking his guitar...i don't know.
It wasn't satisfying seeing either band at that time.

(it's a parody of the "generic" marketing trend that was born in the 80's. More of Johnny's sarcastic humor..... )

                          Dave wrote:

The vocal melodies, the lyrics, the backing vocals, he also helped arrange Ed's guitar riffs into actual songs. I can tell you it was Dave diorecting the beat to songs even, since Alex's drumming became boring as of 1985.

Dave also came up with the name of the band, the image of the band and the attitude, and wrote and directed thier videos.

Exactly..... anyone who thinks Eddie Van Halen is a great songwriter obviously didn't listen to VDIII.

Eddie wrote riffs. Someone else had to shape them into songs. Dave did it best. Hagar did it adequately. Cherone didn't attempt to do it at all.
