I've seen Ed on stage in from 1980 to the last tour over the years and never saw the guy with a bottle of alcohol on stage. Ed must get loaded before the show. He never seemed wasted, just happy buzzed.
I am convinced, after personally dealing with alcoholics, that much of the trouble between Eddie and Dave came from Eddie's drinking problems. His highly irrational behavior and statments made over the years are text-book alcoholic. Couple that with being surrounded by Dave-haters and his decisions make perfect sense. IMO, the future of VH (Tour(s), potential album) hinges on Ed's ability to stay away from the bottle.
What I gather from comments made when Ed was in rehab is that Dave was very supportive and understanding (I believe Alex said something along those lines). I think some people have a problem separating Mr. Roth from the Diamond Dave persona. Hopefully we are old and wise enough to know that, at least part, of Diamond Dave is an act (which BTW is an act I love and have paid plenty of money over the years to be entertained by). I have always believed that Roth was the brains behind the commercial success of VH and that Ed was the musical genius. Having said that, I do not think Dave will do anything that will jeapordize Ed's sobriety, and not just because he wants to continue to make money with the band, but because he is a descent person.
Personally, I doubt that Dave will do his JD routine, but if he does, you can bet the bank that he has discussed it with Ed first to make sure it would not be a problem.

By the way, Ed was seen at most every tour stop in 04 with wine stashed behind his rack and amps... said to have started guzzling during sound check, daily.
The battle with the bottle is tough and I think he will be surrounded with love, care and support during this outing. I know I support Ed, and I hope every VH fan does.
It is clear that Dave has grown a lot over the years, especially the last few passed. I believe Ed's "my new brother" comment to be genuine and sincere.
