Anyway..good post..yeah...i gotta agree that perhaps Ed is gettin slammed too hard here SOMTIMES....this tour may gather steam as it goes...Ed is still one of the top 5 guitarists of all time...
BUT..i think deep inside he also knows that this would be a much bigger deal with Dave on board...certainly he has to be unhappy with the early ticket sales..
Having not seen and not going to see this tour, i cant comment on whether or not the band is still tight...the new songs suck..period...
Van Halen is pretty much dead to me other than the 78-84 era..I don't wish them failure but i know if this thing succeeds..Ed will be the first (well..maybe sammy will be actually) to say "ha ha" ..we dont need Dave..

Bluedog, great post. Somere here seem to agree,as for the rest of the usual jackoffs, they're still mired in their "Dave or the grave" schtick. I agree heavily that Ed has been slammed unjustly here....i mean, the guy IS Van Halen....you can put anyone in front of the mic....but face it...Ed wrote all the tunes you love...and without him, it would'nt be VH. On that merit alone he deserves the right to the name Van Halen, regardless of the fact that Dave pushed to call the band that. I have been a fan og the band since i was a kid...during the Dave years...saw them for the first time in 1984. I've never stated that i hated Dave, or thought his contribution to VH was sub-par. I'm a VH fan, and that includes them with Sammy. So, it's refreshing to see that someone out here in this army of losers is of the level-headed variety...same to you Nigel. Cant wait for Philly tomorrow and Thursday......gonna rock.Comment

First and foremost, VAN HALEN is and always will be Ed, Al, Michael & DAVE! In my humble estimation, the greatest rock band in history. However, after reading several posts here, I’m surprised at some of the unjust and excessive criticism regarding the reunion with Sammy. Is it VAN HALEN? Hell no, we all know that. I certainly agree that Edward influenced people and continues to influence guitarists all over the world...but you said it best...based off of his virtuoso days...he's done with that for whatever reason...and simply doesn't play as well as he used to. Come on, you remember what it was like to listen to Romeo Delight for the first time - Or Mean Street, or Little Dreamer, or Eruption. You remember. Hell, he influenced an entire generation to play guitar, grow their hair and appreciate strange red/black/white striped patterns. Ah, memory lane. Sad, but it isn’t 1984 anymore. All of us on this board is different, Ed’s different, even the grandmaster DLR is different. Time moves on. And nothing we do can change that.

I don't have anything to add to that...totally agree...Is it a crime that there is no more VAN HALEN? Damn right. Just think of all the great music we could have been listening to over the last 19 years. Instead, we were given two great new songs in 1996, and from the looks of it, that’ll be all we get. A much calmer approach to my thoughts on this...lmfao...but again I concur...here's the deal with me and Sham...However, I’m encouraged. I love Dave’s new band. Brian Young is a monster player and Ray is a killer drummer. And Dave, well he’ll always be Dave – in the same class as Jagger, Tyler, even Plant. When I saw Dave on tour with Sammy in 2002, it rocked! Dave and the band kicked ass! It’s easy for me to say that I really enjoyed his set more so than Sam’s. But Sammy didn’t suck; he’s just not Dave. Sam has his own thing going and like most all of you on this forum, I’m not crazy about Sammy’s “interpretation” of Dave’s VAN HALEN material either.
What they do and for the style of music they really do (not claim to do), they are good at. But...that music, to me, is shit. It's not what Van Halen was, or should be. It's not rock and roll hall of fame material. It's hard rock Buffet...and they do that well...but...what the fuck is hard rock buffet? To me...it's shit...compared to the original version...it's shit...but it's an opinion...and of course...opinions are like assholes...everybody has one...
but I certainly will never agree with, or understand the people that fucking go off on tangents saying that Hagar's shit is as good as Roth's shit. Van Halen, it's first inception, was bad ass...they were the band that kicked your ass, ran you over, took a ball bat to you...backed over you again...THEN STARTED THE SHOW...

Here's where we differ...I agree with your different band assessment...but Ed's playing is different...period...I agree with you about the Judgement Day riff, and actually Black and Blue...you've named the only 2 songs that Hagar sings that I actually like. 2 songs, out of what...50...60? Sammy will tell you they've done 300 tunes, and they are all #1's...sorry...tangent... He was an awesome, inovative and creative guitarist...but those days are gone...But I’ll listen to the new material because I want to hear Eddie play guitar. I just view it as a totally different band. I don’t think of it in terms of VAN HALEN. Sure, it has the VAN HALEN label, but it’ll never be VAN HALEN without Dave. Again, we all know that. But you can’t tell me that Judgment Day doesn’t have one the best solos of all time. Or that Black and Blue isn’t a great riff. Ed is THE man! Drunk, sober, married, divorced, sick, healthy, crazy, sane or ego-driven…He’s an awesome, innovative and creative musician.
As for the rest, I can't really comment on that...I didn't, and won't goto that show for any reason...and I'm an hour from Greensboro...
Van Halen, in it's current incarnation just isn't relevant...and Ed...well...like I said...we can all have our opinions...

Joe is a stupid fuckbag. Bluedog, good post. I don't hate hagar either, but I really wish they would've changed the name. Eddiefan, yeah I am positive eddie wrote almost all of the music for van halen, but did he write the lyrics, and be a showman for the band? no, that was Daves job. Eddie did his job great and Dave did his job great. Even when they got Hagar, Eddie did his job good but just not as good as Dave being there (more sythensizer, some weaker riffs/solo's), but sometimes Hagar didn't do his job, more then a few times on being a showman a lyric writer and a singer. He didn't serve some of the music justice, and that kind of angers me as I know Dave would have, and some better music would have been written with Dave. I think I am an eddie fan too, but you have to except the fact that he is an asshole. He didn't just kick Dave out of the band, once he kicked Sammy out, dave out again and Gary cherone out. Being the guitar god that he is, i would expect him to take care of himself better and treat people better, as when having such a skill comes a little responsibility.Comment
