Back on planet Earth what happened was that mini fat Ed did play the bass but they piped in the backing vocals.

This was a very very wrong decision.

It invited in the ghost of Milli Vanilli into the VH camp. Once you know that they are miming one thing then you spend your whole time looking for other stuff.

It's a fucking disgrace and I hate it!

      Meh....

Once you've so blatantly told the CVH fan to STFU, and dole out the bucks for whatever incarnation spED has decided to offer, what's a little Titney Spears vocal efx????

spED already said NO to anyt new material.....

NO to a real CVH reunion.......

      NO to an unmuzzled DLR......

Did anyone think he was actually going to draw the line at canned vocals?

Hard to tell from the gig I saw in terms of the bass. The mix at the Tampa show was so muddled that all I could hear with real clarity were the drums, the lead vocals and the backing vocals (frankly, the backing vocals sounded a bit TOO perfect at times).

The stringed instruments came across as mid-range sludge; Ed was louder than Wolf, but not by all that much.

In all honesty, about the only time I really even paid attention to the kid was during the intro to So This Is Love? He did a pretty neat little bit during the intro. Oh, and Wolfie totally NAILED the RWTD intro...I mean, he played that open E like a motherfucker!! ; )

When I saw the band 25 years ago, I barely paid any attention to Mike Anthony, so his absence wasn't too glaring last year.

It's just like Lounge said. If you chose to be a Van Halen fan these days, you get served whatever Ed feels like giving you. If you don't like it, Ed doesn't give a shit.

As uneven as the shows were last tour as more and more dates were added (mostly due to Ed's substandard performances) they could go out on the road again with Roth doing more or less the same show as last time and it'd still sell out. If one chooses not to see them live, it's not like there won't be at least a dozen other people who would buy that ticket.

          Why would they bother ???

No offence to any virtuoso bassists that may
be reading, but basic bass playing is not complicated.

I also think that any piped in backing vocals were
sung over, making the fact it was piped, suck a
tiny bit less, or what about the argument they
used a harmonizer and Ed and Wolf did actually
sing with the harmonizer or pitch shifter auto
          correcting ???

My take... From the Little Rock show on the 3rd leg. I was sitting in the lower bowl on Wolf's side about stage height with a clear view and could hear both the mains and monitor mix pretty well.

                    Wolfie "played" the whole show.

But... not alone. 90-95% of his playing was piped out thru the mains. There were some very clear suspect times when it wasn't all Wolf's bass though.

Like in that Jump clip a few posts up... when you see Wolf playing the lower root notes, then slide up the neck and hit a little run a couple of octives higher in the 12-14th frets... From the mains you hear the lower pounding root notes... No slide sound and no high notes. In the monitors on stage for the band you could hear the slide and high notes... Most of the audience couldn't hear the monitors...

Both keyboard songs, Jump & I'll wait had very clear bass backing tracks. I saw/heard that neck slide up and high note routine Wolf does in several other songs... but that noise wasn't coming out of the front of the house sound.

It sealed the deal for me during Jump at that show... for about most the beginning of the song until just before the 1st chorus... Wolf was standing on his far side of the stage right on the edge playing pick frisbee with his bass tech. About every 10-20 seconds he'd act like he's doing weak hammer-ons in between flinging picks at his tech down below the far left side of the stage. While all this is happening... pounding bass root notes are blasting out of the main sound system. Clearly not coming from the kid's instrument...

I wouldn't claim the kid's bass was Milli-Vanillied the whole show. A more accurate observation was his playing was "enhanced".

Backing vocals... no question they were piped in throughout the show.

Here's my problem with this... during the keyboard songs, you're hearing the very low bass notes on the keyboard being pounded out. That's how Eddie plays the parts... Like in Jump - the keyboard rides the low C for the bulk of the tune and it blends with the bass guitar. I do not believe that there was any bass guitar being piped in - and I saw them 6 times in 07/08.

As far as the backing vocals go, I believe there was some sort of sweetening in the mix... but that's nothing new. VH has been doing this for quite a while before Wolf was in the band.

I was about 8 or so rows back at his side at the Baltimore gig but to be honest I didn't actually look at what he was doing at any point.

I just kind of pretended he wasn't there.

Don't forget Eddie. I was reading an interview a few years ago and the interviewer asked if Wolfie had discovered girls and Eddie said he knew Wolfie spanked it in the bathroom. LOL! Ed just said Wolfie would spend a lot of time in the bathroom and he knew what was going down.
