That's exactly what I saw/didn't hear too...
To the inexperienced most won't catch it... but as a guitarist and front of the house engineer for almost 3 decades it was clear as day. From what I heard from the monitor mix it reminded me of some the soundboard leaks from Linda McCartney...
For a live house system of that much huge power... it was amazing that Wolf's neck slides and cute little 12-15th fret magic show rarely came thru the subs or the mid-mains. Had he been hot thru those channels as Michael always was... it would have been clear and painfully audible. But it wasn't..."If you want to be a monk... you gotta cook a lot of rice...”Comment

Great example... for what I'm describing in my previous post... even thru crappy computer speakers. Check Mike's bass and the runs he does up the neck between 1:40 - 2:00. Clearly audible...When I think of Van Halen it's not some zit faced kid looking out of place up there but more like this:

I'm 100% honest about what i'm saying and I know what I saw. Yes, he was playing at times and doing backup vocals at times, as was Edward. Then, out of nowhere, the sound would change and the backup vocals would be perfect and bass could be heard when his hands were not even touching the guitar...
That is the truth!
Thanks again Zah!!!

My take... From the Little Rock show on the 3rd leg. I was sitting in the lower bowl on Wolf's side about stage height with a clear view and could hear both the mains and monitor mix pretty well.
Wolfie "played" the whole show.
But... not alone. 90-95% of his playing was piped out thru the mains. There were some very clear suspect times when it wasn't all Wolf's bass though.
Like in that Jump clip a few posts up... when you see Wolf playing the lower root notes, then slide up the neck and hit a little run a couple of octives higher in the 12-14th frets... From the mains you hear the lower pounding root notes... No slide sound and no high notes. In the monitors on stage for the band you could hear the slide and high notes... Most of the audience couldn't hear the monitors...
Both keyboard songs, Jump & I'll wait had very clear bass backing tracks. I saw/heard that neck slide up and high note routine Wolf does in several other songs... but that noise wasn't coming out of the front of the house sound.
It sealed the deal for me during Jump at that show... for about most the beginning of the song until just before the 1st chorus... Wolf was standing on his far side of the stage right on the edge playing pick frisbee with his bass tech. About every 10-20 seconds he'd act like he's doing weak hammer-ons in between flinging picks at his tech down below the far left side of the stage. While all this is happening... pounding bass root notes are blasting out of the main sound system. Clearly not coming from the kid's instrument...
I wouldn't claim the kid's bass was Milli-Vanillied the whole show. A more accurate observation was his playing was "enhanced".
Backing vocals... no question they were piped in throughout the show.
See, he may well have been miming along with pre-recorded bass at some points during the Tampa show. My seats were facing stage center, but I wasn't on the floor. I was seated up about halfway between the floor and the top of the arena, and even as I was alternating between watching the video screen and the performers, I noticed there was a slight lag on the video screen between the sounds being produced onstage, the images being shown onscreen vs the audio actually hitting my ears. When I say slight, I mean a half second or so, but even though I am somewhat of an experienced musician, I simply wasn't close enough to see Wolf's hands on the bass in realtime to tell for sure.
The backing vocals HAD to be pre-recorded in spots, though. Again, they were just too perfect, and multi-toned in terms of different voices and pitches for just Dave and Wolf to have been doing them...and doing them THAT spot-on.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment
